This webinar will help address confusion about what types of aggregate data can be shared for various compliance requests and address reporting requirements for Title IX as they apply to FERPA counselors compared to licensed counselors. The webinar will also address several common discussion points related to Title IX, including what type of services should be offered by counseling services, the importance of releasing information and informed consent forms, and how counseling and medical services work with campus safety on emergency transports.
Join our presenters, Drs. Amy Murphy and Brian Van Brunt as they walk participants through compliance issues related to Title IX, Clery, and information sharing. Those counseling and health providers with clinical licenses hired by the college or university to provide treatment fall under different rules of practice that can make compliance with administrative requests for Title IX or Clery data confusing. Our presenters will provide an overview of information sharing expectations under FERPA and state licensure laws and provide a clear starting point for ethical and policy development discussions.
This program will offer a dozen different scenarios to help administrators and staff problem-solve their scenarios on their campus. Some examples include of these include:
- A clery request by campus safety to identify the number of students who came to counseling that experienced a sexual assault
- A counseling center providing sexual assault advocacy services for female but not male students since their treatment providers do not have experience with advocacy for male sexual assault

- The school is unsure about whether it should offer confidential resources to students considering a Title IX report or if the school should direct them to counseling support

As an internationally recognized expert in behavioral intervention, threat assessment and mental illness, and instructional design, Brian (he/him/his) will bring you the information you need to better protect your school environment from harm. Author of over a dozen books, Brian has spent time as child and family therapist, university professor and a partner at a violence and sexual assault prevention law firm. He currently serves as the assistant deputy director of training at Secure Community Network which represents the safety and security needs of the Jewish Federation.

Dr. Amy Murphy, serves as an assistant professor of student development and higher education leadership at Angelo State University. She is also the program coordinator for the M.Ed. in student development and leadership in higher education as well as the graduate certificate in academic advising, both fully online programs. Amy has been in the role of full-time, tenure-track faculty member at Angelo State since 2016. In this role, she regularly designs and teaches courses on educational law, student affairs administration, program administration and assessment, and academic advising. The degree program is nationally-recognized and ranked among the best in the U.S. for quality and affordability by multiple online higher education guides.
Dr. Murphy writes and presents to campus practitioners and educators on behavioral intervention, sexual misconduct, student conduct, threat and violence risk assessment, and other student affairs issues and topics. She co-authored A Staff Guide to Addressing Disruptive and Dangerous Behavior On Campus and Uprooting Sexual Violence in Higher Education. Her research includes the joint development of the ERIS: Extremist Risk Intervention Scale as well as other tools and resources for behavioral intervention teams in schools and universities. She has authored more than 10 different book chapters and several peer-reviewed journal articles on related topics. Amy is a past president of NABITA, the National Association for Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment, and past managing editor of the Journal of Campus Behavioral Intervention (J-BIT). During her time on the NABITA advisory board, she supported the development of standards for behavioral intervention teams and for case management practices through her research and writing.
Amy has more than 20 years of experience in higher education and student affairs. She is formerly the dean of students and managing director of the Center for Campus Life at Texas Tech University. Her experiences include chair of the school’s behavioral intervention team, oversight of prevention and response activities for gender-based violence and discrimination as the deputy Title IX coordinator for students, as well as administrative involvement in student conduct, disability services, counseling, and enrollment management. Amy provided leadership to a wide array of co-curricular and extracurricular student involvement activities, including a system of more than 450 registered student organizations, including 50 inter/national fraternities and sororities.
Amy’s experiences in postsecondary education include diverse involvement in a number of complex and transformative projects, including a task force for Greek culture and task force for sexual harassment and sexual assault, new academic program proposal and development, strategic enrollment planning, and many special projects dedicated to the creation of innovative, research-based services and programs. Amy received her Ph.D. in higher education administration from Texas Tech University in 2010. She currently lives and works in San Angelo, TX.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?

When do I register?

What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- You will receive the login information within 5 minutes of registering for the webinar.
- The presentation materials will be available before the live event. Please check the link in the login information email.
- On the day of the live event, participants can log in 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
