The problem is that not all faculty, staff, and leaders have a foundational knowledge of guided pathways and are not positioned to lead and support guided pathways success reform at the institutional level.
Participants will be able to describe the four pillars of guided pathways: clarifying pathways, helping students choose and enter pathways, helping students stay on the path, and ensuring students are learning. In addition, participants will walk away able to discuss how student success reform efforts require leadership at all levels.
With unacceptably low graduation rates, especially for students of color, colleges and universities seek ways to increase student success and reduce equity gaps. Therefore, whole-college student success reform efforts are needed. Guided pathways are one of the successful reform efforts that have gained momentum nationwide. However, for guided pathways to be successful, all faculty, staff, and leaders need to understand the why, the what, and the how of this national reform movement.
This session will first highlight the data illustrating the low completion rates of students and how even when students graduate, they have taken excess credits due to confusion around requirements. Next, we will discuss the four pillars of guided pathways so that participants understand the comprehensive approach behind this reform effort and the need for collaboration across the institution. The first pillar is clarifying pathways so that graduation requirements are clear to students. The second pillar focuses on ways to help students choose and enter a pathway. The third pillar is about helping students stay on their path. The fourth pillar, ensuring learning, requires colleges to reflect on and improve teaching and learning practices. Finally, participants will hear about several ways institutions have implemented guided pathways. This session will provide participants with the foundations of guided pathways, so they are prepared to engage in this work on campus.

A foundational knowledge of guided pathways will position faculty, staff, and leaders to engage in whole-college reform needed to address low completion rates, especially for students of color.
Dr. Christine Harrington is a Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at New Jersey City University. Previously, she worked at Middlesex College for 18 years as a Professor of Psychology and Student Success, the Director of the Center for the Enrichment of Learning and Teaching, the Coordinator of Student Success, and a Counselor. She also served a 2-year term as the Executive Director of the Student Success Center at the NJ Council of County Colleges. She is the author of Student Success in College: Doing What Works! 4th edition, a research-based text for the first-year seminar course that aligns to Guided Pathways, published by Cengage Learning, Keeping Us Engaged: Student Perspectives (and Research-Based Strategies) on What Works and Why, published by Stylus, Engaging Faculty in Guided Pathways: A Practical Resource for College Leaders, and Ensuring Learning: Supporting Faculty to Improve Student Success, published by Rowman and Littlefield. She also co-authored with Todd Zakrajsek Dynamic Lecturing: Research-Based Strategies for Evidence-Based Practices, and Designing a Motivational Syllabus: Creating a Learning Path for Student Engagement with Melissa Thomas, both published by Stylus, and Why the First-Year Seminar Matters: Helping Students Choose and Stay on a Career Path with Theresa Orosz, published by Rowman and Littlefield. What is a live webinar?
A live webinar is an interactive online training. Participants can communicate with the presenter(s) during the event via a live chat feature.
What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can be accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You will receive the recording the week following the live event. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the purchase date.
How long are the webinars?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- You will receive the login information within 5 minutes of registering for the webinar.
- The presentation materials will be available before the live event. Please check the link in the login information email.
- On the day of the live event, participants can log in 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
What are the technical requirements?
