First-Year Students & Libraries: Assessing The Impact Of Information Literacy
Challenge - Helping first-year students navigate and filter through information for academic success
One major issue facing today’s first year student is the use and understanding of the information is thrust at us. It is not always that we seek material for research; material is forced on us through social media, web apps, and email. Teaching students and faculty to understand how to gauge and filter this onslaught will be part of the overall presentation.
I want audience members to be able to understand and measure the effectiveness of Library Instruction as it relates to the first-year students. This can be accomplished by analyzing the participants against their course successes, as well as their readiness for greater academic challenges.
Shigeru Aoyagi, Chief, Division of Basic Education, UNESCO, stated that: “For all societies, Information Literacy is becoming an increasingly important component of not only literacy policies and strategies, but also of global policies to promote human development.”
Both community college and four-year institutions have longstanding traditions of working with instructors needing Library instruction, and this tradition has created an atmosphere of both faculty and students requiring true understanding of Information Literacy. At the heart of information literacy is understanding and problem-solving. That, according to the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), involves asking questions and seeking answers, finding information, formulating opinions, evaluating sources and making decisions fostering successful learning. Items such as the difference between high school “reports” and college “research” papers often confound the first-year student, and information literacy plays a key role in that student’s understandings and expectations as they relate to the discovery of information and how that information is produced and valued. These Information Literacy programs are more than a class; they are a journey in educating the first-year student in developing and refine search strategies, as well as managing and organizing searching processes and results. Instructor are charged with educating the first-year student on what is expected from them as college students, and with this process in place the faculty can be assured that the assessment process will have a clear outcome, as well as clean and clear documentation. In turn, the students they produce are confident individuals and responsible citizens.

Kent Seaver has 24 years of experience in the field of student assessment, learning resources and academic success. He has enjoyed success in working with the new to college student, home school students, transfer students, and returning student veterans. He is presently the Director of Academic Operations at the University of Texas at Dallas for the Jindal School of Management. In that role he has worked diligently to ensure that student success is a top priority in terms of completion, including but not limited to alumni and student mentoring, assessment impact, as well as program and information literacy. Kent has researched the impact information literacy has on the current landscape of higher education, as well as the work force placement impacts and advising successes related to their educational requirements. Kent has written articles dealing with prior learning, student success and information literacy for the American Technical Education Association, Library Intelligence, NACADA and Military Advanced Education.

What is a live webinar?
A live webinar is an interactive online training. Participants can communicate with the presenter(s) during the event via a live chat feature.
What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can be accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You will receive the recording the week following the live event. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the purchase date.
How long are the webinars?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- You will receive the login information within 5 minutes of registering for the webinar.
- The presentation materials will be available before the live event. Please check the link in the login information email.
- On the day of the live event, participants can log in 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
What are the technical requirements?

Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
