The primary problem that this webinar addresses is the lack of student engagement in career exploration and planning. The first-year seminar offers a way for colleges to require all students to engage in this process.
Participants will be able to describe how the first-year seminar can be used as a vehicle to help students explore career options and develop an academic plan, utilize strategies to re-design the first-year seminar curriculum, and summarize the research on the effectiveness of this course.
The Guided Pathways movement calls for increased career exploration and planning. Many students are entering college unclear about their career goals and as a result, have not clearly mapped out an academic and career plan. As a result, students are taking longer to graduate and often do so with excess, unnecessary credits. This often means students are graduating with increased financial debt.
Although many colleges are engaged in the advising redesign process, it is very challenging to provide students with in-depth opportunities to engage in career exploration and planning outside of the classroom setting. The first-year seminar can be used for this purpose. During this interactive session, we’ll explore how colleges can re-imagine the first-year seminar course so that it more intentionally addresses career and educational planning. Several strategies and models for the first-year seminar as an essential part of the Guided Pathways movement will be shared and discussed, and research on the benefits and value of first-year seminars will be reviewed.

A required first-year seminar course for all students is an excellent way to scale career exploration and academic planning efforts to assist students with choosing and staying on a career path, two essential components of the Guided Pathways movement.
Dr. Christine Harrington is a Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at New Jersey City University. Previously, she worked at Middlesex College for 18 years as a Professor of Psychology and Student Success, the Director of the Center for the Enrichment of Learning and Teaching, the Coordinator of Student Success, and a Counselor. She also served a 2-year term as the Executive Director of the Student Success Center at the NJ Council of County Colleges. She is the author of Student Success in College: Doing What Works! 4th edition, a research-based text for the first-year seminar course that aligns to Guided Pathways, published by Cengage Learning, Keeping Us Engaged: Student Perspectives (and Research-Based Strategies) on What Works and Why, published by Stylus, Engaging Faculty in Guided Pathways: A Practical Resource for College Leaders, and Ensuring Learning: Supporting Faculty to Improve Student Success, published by Rowman and Littlefield. She also co-authored with Todd Zakrajsek Dynamic Lecturing: Research-Based Strategies for Evidence-Based Practices, and Designing a Motivational Syllabus: Creating a Learning Path for Student Engagement with Melissa Thomas, both published by Stylus, and Why the First-Year Seminar Matters: Helping Students Choose and Stay on a Career Path with Theresa Orosz, published by Rowman and Littlefield. Dr. Harrington is frequently invited to present at conferences and at colleges and universities.

What is a live webinar?
A live webinar is an interactive online training. Participants can communicate with the presenter(s) during the event via a live chat feature.
What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can be accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You will receive the recording the week following the live event. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the purchase date.
How long are the webinars?
Webinars range from 60-90 minutes. Please check each training for the exact timeframe.
How do I register?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- You will receive the login information within 5 minutes of registering for the webinar.
- The presentation materials will be available before the live event. Please check the link in the login information email.
- On the day of the live event, participants can log in 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
What are the technical requirements?
Innovative Educators uses Zoom as its web conferencing provider. If you have not previously attended a Zoom event, please Join a Test Meeting to make sure your computer is compatible with Zoom. Be sure to complete this test prior to the live event.

- 30 days prior: Full refund
- 14 days prior: $100 processing fee
- Fewer than 14 days: Credit toward another IE event. Please note that registration for the live webinar includes access to the recording which you can share, as it is a campus access license. Which workshops are your top rated?
We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.
Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. Is there an admin view?
This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.
