Learn how one school transformed the college experience for at-promise students through a holistic peer mentoring program.

CASE STUDY

The Thompson Scholars Learning Community (TSLC) Peer Mentoring Program, developed at the University of Nebraska, is designed to support students from at-promise backgrounds during their college transition. This program specifically targets students from low-income, first-generation, and racially diverse backgrounds.

The TSLC program pairs first-year students with experienced peer mentors who guide them through various aspects of college life, from academic challenges to social integration. By adopting a holistic approach, the mentors help students feel a sense of belonging, build confidence in their academic and career paths, and navigate personal challenges.

Integral to the success of the peer mentoring program is the robust training curriculum the peer mentors participate in. Utilizing the student success workshop content offered by StudentLingo, the TSLC program has been able to offer consistent and holistic resources that meet the needs of diverse learners.

By merging the academics with the mentor meetings, our students see their mentors as experts in navigating the college environment, building trust as academic leaders. The StudentLingo modules further enhance this experience by providing in-depth learning on essential topics, creating a seamless integration of classroom learning and individualized mentor support.
