Preparing Online Learners & Improving Retention: NOVA’s Strategic Use Of OnlineLingo

CASE STUDY

NOVA Online faced a critical challenge: ensuring students, especially those in demanding programs like nursing and allied health, had the support they needed to succeed in an online environment. Many students struggled with assessments and lacked essential skills such as time management and test-taking strategies, putting their academic progress at risk. Faculty and staff also needed a more efficient way to provide tailored support, while juggling responsibilities across multiple departments.

To address these challenges, NOVA Online implemented OnlineLingo, an interactive platform that offers personalized support plans for students performing poorly. These plans combine tutoring sessions and targeted workshops, giving students the chance to build key competencies before continuing their coursework.

OnlineLingo further enhances NOVA’s First-Year Experience (FYE) by offering 24/7 access to resources, ensuring all students—regardless of background—have the tools to thrive. Faculty benefit from a cohesive, streamlined approach that reinforces learning outcomes and optimizes support efforts across departments.

With OnlineLingo, NOVA Online has transformed its student support system, addressing individual needs while freeing up staff time for high-impact teaching and advising—ensuring better outcomes for students and faculty alike.

OnlineLingo has been an essential tool for our students and program. It provides tailored support that aligns with our goals for student success, especially for those who need extra help with time management and academic skills. The flexibility and accessibility of the platform allow us to engage our diverse student body, no matter their background or schedule, and has helped improve student outcomes across the board.
