The College of Southern Nevada needed to prepare its online learners as it increased its remote offerings. Are students prepared? Is online learning the best course format for them? What skill gaps are present? They were in need of an orientation that specifically addressed online learners as well as an assessment tool to help learners understand what it takes to be a successful online student, potential skill gaps, and resources to better prepare them for this learning environment.
CSN’s Orientation to Online Learning is engaging, providing critical instructional content that walks students through the essential components of online success such as: preparation, organization, and online study strategies. Each section has a short quiz with a minimum passing score to ensure that students comprehend key content. If students miss a question, they are directed to help resources immediately so that active learning is timely and relevant.
The customized readiness assessment incorporates student success workshops to help bridge skill gaps around important topics like time management, effectively communicating online, what makes a great discussion post, and taking tests online. This interactive assessment integrates quizzing, tips and resources to prepare online learners for success. The combination of a readiness assessment, comprehensive orientation, and personalized online resources provides students with the foundational skills needed to be successful in online learning, while freeing up faculty to concentrate on instructional content.
