Sonny Nguyen is a first-generation college grad that has been working in higher education for almost 20 years. His passion has been in supporting and preparing students along their entry into college. Sonny’s career began with the federally funded TRiO Programs through the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in creating opportunities for underserved youth grades 6-12 to have access to mentorship, college preparation & engagement, as well as career development. This led to enrollment management work at both private and public institutions, most recently at the University of San Diego as the lead Outreach Admissions Counselor for the largest yielding territory for the school. It was through this experience that reinforced his call in working to increase access for underserved students, which eventually led to the community college. Currently, Sonny is in transition to serve as Dean of Enrollment Services at San Diego Miramar College, overseeing all major functions of the student onboarding experience which includes Outreach, Dual Enrollment, Admissions, and Financial Aid. He is a San Diego native, born and raised, a forever “townie” who has received his BA in Psych at UCSD and MA in Education, with a focus on multicultural counseling, from San Diego State.
