Overview:
This program will review the fundamental, research-based core concepts related to keeping university and college communities safe. Participants will gain an understanding of risk factors and aggression. They will also develop a better understanding of the differences between psychological and threat assessment processes and the importance of managing at-risk student behavior through engagement and silo reduction. Steps towards developing behavioral, risk and threat intervention teams on campus will also be discussed, as well as a look at trends in team makeup, leadership, documentation and communication within the larger campus community.
Objectives:
Participants will:
  • Understand the difference between primal and cognitive aggression
  • Identify key behaviors that require further engagement and intervention based on the cognitive aggression continuum
  • Learn about common BIT/TAT/RAT team characteristics on college and university campuses
  • Discuss and review team dynamics such as leadership, name, size, scope, communication, assessment and referrals
  • Review the differences between psychological assessment and threat assessment as it is used on a college campus
  • Understand and discuss the benefits and limitations of off-campus versus on-campus assessments
  • Be able to demonstrate research-based threat assessment concepts through ATAP’s RAGE-V (2006) and Turner and Gelles (2003) model of threat assessment
  • Learn about the importance of contextual evaluation with respect to diversity and cultural differences
