Here, instructors seek to use information provided in the assessment process to determine how well learning is taking place and make modifications in future learning activities. That process may be formalized by making plans and developing an outline, or it may happen informally as instructors think about and reflect on the learning outcomes and means of improving them. Effective evaluation is best done when the instructor and learner establish strong and meaningful objectives, activities that will meet those objectives, and measurements to assure that the learner has met those objectives.” – Jim Berger, Ph.D.

In this webinar participants will be exposed to basic adult learning principles, the creation of activities based on those principles, and the use of varying assessment techniques. Starting from Bloom’s Taxonomy and its revision by Alexander et al., participants will be shown a variety of approaches that can be used as assessment in formal, informal, formative or summative ways. A variety of assessment techniques will be provided and discussion will focus on how such techniques can be used to improve feedback from learners in face-to-face, blended, and online classes. Participants will be provided handouts and resources to help them develop their own assessment approaches for use in their respective classrooms.

Dr. Aaron W. Hughey is a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs at Western Kentucky University, where he oversees the graduate degree program in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Before joining the faculty in 1991, he spent 10 years in progressive administrative positions, including five years as the Associate Director of University Housing at WKU. He was also head of the department of Counseling and Student Affairs for five years before returning to the faculty full-time in 2008. Dr. Hughey has degrees from the University of Tennessee at Martin, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Western Kentucky University, and Northern Illinois University. He has authored (or co-authored) over 60 refereed publications on a wide range of issues including student learning and development, leadership, standardized testing, diversity and educational administration. He regularly presents at national and international conferences and consults extensively with companies and schools. He also provides training programs on a variety of topics centered on change management.

Dr. Jim Berger is a Professor and Coordinator of the master’s degree program in Adult Education at Western Kentucky University. He has been teaching in higher education for fifteen years and helped spearhead the establishment and opening of Adult Learner Services on WKU’s campus and continues to provide guidance and direction for that initiative.  He regularly presents at national and international conferences on topics related to adult learners and the services provided to them and has published over thirty manuscripts related to teaching adults and higher education.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?

An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online for faculty and staff to access anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You typically receive a link to the recording and handouts within 24 hours of registration.

How long are the webinars?

Webinars can be 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Please check the webinar page for the exact timeframe.

How do I register?

When do I register?

You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.

What is the process for attending a live event?

The process is as follows:

  • We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
  • We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
  • We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
  • On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
  • We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?

Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

What are the technical requirements?

Innovative Educators uses WebEx as its web conferencing provider. If you have not previously attended a WebEx event, please Join a Test Meeting to make sure your computer is compatible with WebEx. What equipment is required?

For individual or small group viewing, a computer with a reliable Internet connection and audio capabilities are all that’s needed. For large group presentations, we recommend a computer with a reliable Internet connection and speakers, as well as an LCD projector. Participants can call in via phone if they are having trouble retrieving the audio over the computer. Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.
