Webinar 1: Wednesday, November 28 ~ 3:00-4:15pm (Eastern)Webinar 2: Wednesday, December 5 ~ 1:00-2:00pm (Eastern)Webinar 3: Thursday, December 6 ~ 3:00-4:15pm (Eastern)
Using Peer Tutors To Improve Academic Success
Wednesday, November 28 ~ 3:00-4:15pm (Eastern)
This webinar will assist tutoring coordinators and learning center professionals in improving their programs and tutoring practices at the post-secondary level. Peer tutors can be a valuable and cost-efficient way to improve students’ academic success. Peer tutors can share their expertise and mentor fellow students in a non-threatening environment. This webinar will discuss three aspects of organizing a peer tutoring program to improve student learning and retention and is applicable to other peer leader programs and Supplemental Instruction.
Webinar topics will include:
- Organizing various types of peer tutoring services: appointment, walk-in, weekly group tutoring sessions, and online tutoring: The presenter will outline various tutoring services which may work best using peers.
- Staffing and evaluating peer tutors: Peer staff turnover is a concern, particularly for community colleges. How does one maintain the program quality level with a continual turnover of peer tutors? The presenter will discuss how we can efficiently staff and evaluate tutors. Examples of interview and evaluation forms will be included.
- Conducting tutor training: Research shows that tutoring “with training” makes a difference in student retention. An array of tutor training options will be discussed. These include types of training such as a class format, an online format, paid meetings, and cross-training with other student leaders.
Learning Strategy Tutors: How To Service Students Requesting Help For Non-Supported Courses
Wednesday, December 5 ~ 1:00-2:00pm (Eastern)
Learning Centers can operate from two basic approaches; seek tutorial support for all requests that come across the door by continually hiring new tutors as the need arises, or offer a list of specific high-demand course tutors and concentrate on them. While the latter seems to be the preferred model among most centers, there are other ways to help students without the need for hiring an endless stream of content-specific tutors.
Our utilization of Learning Strategies (LS) tutors at the University of Michigan-Flint came about in 2012, as we tried to find a way to service students requesting help for courses not covered by content tutors. We believed that a student needing help was not always struggling with content, but with managing their time, their notes, and their test review skills. We later found that by grouping LS tutors among specific meta-majors, such as Science, Social Science, Technology, and Humanities, we were better able to target the overall academic support provided each student. By delivering LS tutors in conjunction with a special intake form as well as a checklist our LS tutors use during their first meetings, we have been able to provide help to many students requesting services, even when a content tutor is not available.
Tutoring Center Best Practices: Training, Evaluation, Certification & Recognition
Thursday, December 6 ~ 3:00-4:15pm (Eastern)
Tutoring has been shown to make a positive difference in college students’ academic success. To make sure their programs are supporting campus retention efforts, tutoring and learning center professionals need to develop and maintain best practices. Based on several years’ experience, research, and best practices, the presenter will discuss ways to improve standards in the following areas: tutoring programs and services, training, program evaluation, certification and recognition of tutoring professionals and programs.
Webinar 1 & 3 will be presented by:

Webinar 2 will be presented by:
For nearly thirty years, Dr. Michael Kassel has directed the Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction (SI) programs at the University of Michigan-Flint. Having stopped out of college with a 1.4 GPA, Kassel returned to college in the late-1980s, graduating with honors earning a BA in History at UM-Flint (1989). Kassel went on to earn a Master of Liberal Studies in American Culture from Michigan (1991) and a Ph. D. in History from Michigan State (2004). All of his graduate work was done while serving as the founder of the Academic Enrichment Center, which provides tutorial support for all UM-Flint schools including its college of Arts and Sciences. In 1996, Kassel brought Supplemental Instruction to UM-Flint and has continued to direct that program as well. Kassel also lead the program to College Reading and Learning Association International Tutor Training Program Certification in 2013.
In addition to recruiting, hiring, training and administering all tutors and SI leaders, Kassel also offers numerous academic workshops on the topics of note-taking, strategies of successful students, vocabulary building, improving text comprehension, time management and text anxiety. Kassel also teaches American history courses, as well as graduate courses in Popular Culture and American Television.

Which workshops are your top rated?
We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.
Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (48 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. If you are interested in learning more about this option, give us a call.
Is there an admin view?
This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.
How have other schools leveraged reporting?
- One of our partners, College of Southern Nevada, used StudentLingo to measure learning outcomes. in a study, one class had access to StudentLingo and the other cohort did not. 92% of the cohort with access to StudentLingo earned a whole letter grade higher than the cohort without StudentLingo.
- A lot of our partners use the data to justify funding for grants, operating dollars, or for new program development.
- The evaluation data is particularly useful in identifying what type of learning students prefer and the qualitative takeaways from viewing the workshop.
- Some of our partners use the data to connect with their student information system, like Banner or Peoplesoft.
- I think a great way to get started on how you want to use the data is to ask yourself some questions:
- How will I know if StudentLingo was successful?
- What do I hope students will gain from access to StudentLingo?
- What data is important for me to know in order to show that StudentLingo is a worthwhile purchase?
What is TutorLingo?
TutorLingo is a series of 9 online training modules that prepare tutors by providing the basic skills necessary to support their peers in becoming more independent and strategic learners.
Should the TutorLingo trainings be viewed in any particular order?
