Supporting Students' Well-Being Using Online Support Resources: A Model For Growth & Resilience
On-Demand Training
Challenge
How can we direct our students to online resources to help them with their wellbeing and sense of purpose?
Key Takeaway
Using a simple three-point organizational model, webinar participants will focus on three broad reasons for using online resources for wellbeing. All participants will receive an exercise work booklet to help identify and share ideas with colleagues and students.
Overview
This webinar examines finding & curating online resources for wellbeing and resilience. We know that colleges provide many resources for students, but we also know that students search for open resources online. The presenter will move beyond the services provided by colleges/universities to the broader online community, the internet, that students can and do access. Using a simple three-point organizational model, the presenter, Steve Piscitelli, will focus on finding, curating, creating, and sharing online resources to support overall wellbeing.
They Share: Finding & Curating Resources
The internet provides billions of resources that THEY want to share with us. When we look for these external online resources, we start by assessing our needs and then they hopefully provide resources or information to help fulfill our needs. Examples include community activists, meditation leaders, bereavement groups, and improv troupes.
We Share: Creating & Sharing Our Resources
This looks at us giving back to our community. When WE SHARE, we provide our creations to the community for its betterment. In this situation, we look for (or provide) a platform to share information, energy and light to a broader group. When we focus on giving of ourselves it can enhance our purpose and wellbeing. Examples include when we share our art, blogs, and videos. These provide opportunities for us to contribute to others. We look to contribute rather than receive.
We Share so They Can Share: Multiplier Effect
In this scenario, first WE share a skill, talent, or other resource to a larger group with the expressed purpose of helping them develop something specific. THEY (that larger group; the broader community) can then build on what we share so they can share something with their community. Our contributions live on in their creations. Example: Innovative Educators develops 50 student success workshops. THEY are sharing these resources with you and your students. As a Director of Student Life, you learn something about health & wellness and develop a new program or create some new resources. You share these newly developed ideas with your students through an online session or a podcast. You now become the THEY who is sharing.
Steve will share examples of each category and provide a Call-to-Action so that participants can take the model back to their colleagues and students and contribute to continual growth and resilience.
Objectives
- Help students examine and express the reasons they seek online resources for wellbeing: (1) to find a resource to help them with a need; (2) to contribute to a larger community; or (3) to help someone else contribute to their community
- Help students discover community resources that can help them explore community service, career, and wellbeing
- Encourage students to identify their talents and skill sets that may have impact on others
- Explore how faculty and staff can help students identify how to apply the “WE SHARE so THEY can SHARE” model as part of a course curriculum or as a co-curricular activity
- Administration
- Faculty (general)
- Faculty (specific): Education Department, Psychology Department
- Sociology
- Human Resources
- Online Learning
- Student Services
- Anyone interested in utilizing resources to support growth & resilience

Since Steve left the classroom he has immersed himself in community issues of growth and resilience. For instance, he and Roxie are a pet therapy team. Which workshops are your top rated?
We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.
Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. If you are interested in learning more about this option, give us a call.
Is there an admin view?
This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.
How have other schools leveraged reporting?
- One of our partners, College of Southern Nevada, used StudentLingo to measure learning outcomes. in a study, one class had access to StudentLingo and the other cohort did not. 92% of the cohort with access to StudentLingo earned a whole letter grade higher than the cohort without StudentLingo.
- A lot of our partners use the data to justify funding for grants, operating dollars, or for new program development.
- The evaluation data is particularly useful in identifying what type of learning students prefer and the qualitative takeaways from viewing the workshop.
- Some of our partners use the data to connect with their student information system, like Banner or Peoplesoft.
- I think a great way to get started on how you want to use the data is to ask yourself some questions:
- How will I know if StudentLingo was successful?
- What do I hope students will gain from access to StudentLingo?
- What data is important for me to know in order to show that StudentLingo is a worthwhile purchase?
What is TutorLingo?
TutorLingo is a series of 9 online training modules that prepare tutors by providing the basic skills necessary to support their peers in becoming more independent and strategic learners.
Should the TutorLingo trainings be viewed in any particular order?
No, each training is a stand-alone workshop, and they can be viewed in any order.
What is the CRLA?
The CRLA is a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, tutoring, and mentoring. In 1989, the CRLA created a training program that is considered ‘best-practice’ for tutor training. A fews years ago, Innovative Educators partnered with the CRLA to create supplementary training modules. Our training supports learning centers in achieving level 1 certification through CRLA.
Do CRLA members receive a discount on TutorLingo?
Yes. CRLA members receive a 10% discount on TutorLingo.
