Summer Bridge Programs: Easing The Transition For First-Generation College Students
First-generation college-goers experience a variety of challenges as they enter and move through higher education. Much of the existing research indicates that students whose parents did not attend college are more likely than their non first-generation counterparts to be less academically prepared for college, to have less knowledge of how to apply for college and financial assistance, and to have more difficulty in acclimating themselves to college once they enroll (Tym, et al., 2005).
As such, educational institutions must provide students with specific types of resources and support to ensure that they move into and through college successfully. Ackerman (2006) demonstrated that Summer Bridge Programs for low-income, first-generation students helped to ease their transition into college. Effective Summer Bridge Programs utilize a strong peer-mentoring base to ensure that students make a real connection to campus. Some models incorporate a holistic approach with career exploration, study skills workshops, and a host of other high impact practices (McCurrie, 2009).
This webinar will present a plan for an effective Summer Bridge Program, one that supplements existing programmatic and institutional efforts to support first-generation students. Participants will learn the importance of building relationships between academic and student affairs divisions, as well as empowering students through the development of critical college knowledge to ensure their academic success and retention.

Dr. Paz Maya Olivérez is currently Interim Associate Vice President of Student Success at CSU Dominguez Hills, where she leads several student support programs. These include the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Encounter to Excellence (ETE), Summer Bridge, the Dominguez Hills First-Year Experience, the Career Center, Supplemental Instruction, & Toro Guardian Scholars. Dr. Olivérez also holds an adjunct faculty position in the Masters in College Counseling program in the College of Education at CSU Dominguez Hills. In the past, Dr. Olivérez has also held positions as a K-12 teacher, educational researcher, program evaluator, and trainer for counselors, advisors, and other K-12 and higher education professionals on best practices for supporting student success. Dr. Olivérez has spent the last 17 years working with underrepresented students and is passionate about ensuring that all students have access to the support necessary to successfully pursue their academic, personal, and professional aspirations. She holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Southern California, an M.S. in Counseling from CSU Long Beach, and a B.A. in Sociology from UC Santa Cruz.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online for faculty and staff to access anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You typically receive a link to the recording and handouts within 24 hours of registration.
How long are the webinars?
Webinars can be 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Please check the webinar page for the exact timeframe.

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
- We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
- We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
- On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
What are the technical requirements?

What equipment is required?
For individual or small group viewing, a computer with a reliable Internet connection and audio capabilities are all that’s needed. For large group presentations, we recommend a computer with a reliable Internet connection and speakers, as well as an LCD projector. Participants can call in via phone if they are having trouble retrieving the audio over the computer. Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.
