Students’ emotional well-being is a key consideration for student affairs  professionals as we work to provide students with a robust college experience that adds value to their degree and prepares them for success during and after college. This webinar will help to ensure that student affairs professionals are better-equipped to identify warning signs of student distress, understand possible stressors, and apply counseling strategies that support students’ well-being.

  • How to identify warning signs of a student who is in distress or crisis
  • How to create a campus climate and culture that relieves rather than creates distress for students
  • How to address environmental factors that may create different types of challenges for college students of diverse backgrounds
  • How the college experience can create distress for different student populations

While today’s college students share many of the same experiences as students from previous generations, such as struggling through the high school-to-college transition, developing new peer relationships, and navigating major and course selection, the constantly evolving nature of social media, tumultuous national political climate, and growing violence on and off school & college campuses throughout the country create new stressors and pressures that make coping with life in college increasingly difficult for some students. At the same time, more college students than ever are coming to our campuses experiencing depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. In addition, students’ experiences as they adjust to the demands of college life, move through different developmental stages, get exposed to new ideas, shape their own identities, and plan for their futures, can sometimes cause distress.

All students experience different challenges that may create emotional distress while they are in college and this webinar will help participants feel more confident about addressing these issues when they arise to support students’ overall well-being. After attending this webinar, participants will be better-able to support students experiencing emotional distress or crisis. They will be able to identify the warning signs of a student in emotional distress, identify possible causes of this distress, and implement the appropriate counseling strategies and skills to support students’ well-being depending on the nature and urgency of the situation. Participants will also be able to determine when it is appropriate to consult with a colleague to determine how best to serve a student, intervene in the situation, or refer a student for mental health counseling or other support services to address the students’ needs. They will also be provided with tools and strategies for developing a departmental safety plan that can be implemented to address instances when a student may be in extreme distress and pose a threat to themselves or others.

Failing to address the needs of students in distress on college campuses can have dire consequences for our campus communities. As student affairs professionals, we are better-suited to support our students and our colleagues when we understand the warning signs and behaviors associated with emotional distress, as well as the strategies that we can apply in our work to ensure that students of concern are provided with the appropriate resources and support to alleviate their stress and support their well-being.

  • Identify practical strategies for working with students to ensure that they feel supported and can identify support on- or off-campus when they are experiencing emotional distress
  • Explore counseling strategies and skills that can be applied to support the well-being of students in distress
  • Examine strategies for collaborating with campus partners to support the well-being of all students and intervene when students are in distress
  • Demonstrate how to create a safer and more effective campus environment that supports student success by promoting students’ emotional well-being
  • Administration
  • Enrollment Management
  • Faculty
  • Human Resources
  • Online Learning
  • Student Services/Affairs
  • Academic Advisors
  • Mental Health Professionals
  • Any educator interested in learning more about helping students in distress
“With an increasingly diverse population of students at institutions of higher education across the nation, creating a college environment that promotes the well-being of all students can be a challenge. Intentional efforts by student affairs professionals to implement counseling strategies in their work with students can help to support the well-being of all students and prevent students in distress from becoming students in crisis.”

Which workshops are your top rated?

We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.

Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?

You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (48 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. If you are interested in learning more about this option, give us a call.

Is there an admin view?

This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.

How have other schools leveraged reporting?
  • One of our partners, College of Southern Nevada, used StudentLingo to measure learning outcomes. in a study, one class had access to StudentLingo and the other cohort did not. 92% of the cohort with access to StudentLingo earned a whole letter grade higher than the cohort without StudentLingo.
  • A lot of our partners use the data to justify funding for grants, operating dollars, or for new program development.
  • The evaluation data is particularly useful in identifying what type of learning students prefer and the qualitative takeaways from viewing the workshop.
  • Some of our partners use the data to connect with their student information system, like Banner or Peoplesoft.
  • I think a great way to get started on how you want to use the data is to ask yourself some questions:
    1. How will I know if StudentLingo was successful?
    2. What do I hope students will gain from access to StudentLingo?
    3. What data is important for me to know in order to show that StudentLingo is a worthwhile purchase?
What is TutorLingo?

TutorLingo is a series of 9 online training modules that prepare tutors by providing the basic skills necessary to support their peers in becoming more independent and strategic learners.
