Student Success Courses: Developing Common Learning Outcomes That Improve Consistency & Effectiveness
This session will provide an overview of how two-year colleges in Arkansas recently developed common learning outcomes for student success courses. Intended to provide a forum for faculty from across the state to discuss the critical needs of students as they matriculate through their first year at a community college, this effort is making some important statements; most notably, that a consistent, high-impact pathway of success during the first year of college is more important than we ever knew.
In this webinar, we will review success courses from a national perspective, including highly ranked topics, goals, and objectives. We will also take a close look at survey results showing commonalities in student success course topics across the Arkansas community college population.
Participants will learn about the journey the Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges and its member colleges embarked upon to identify students most common critical needs for success. The common learning outcomes for student success courses collectively identified by college faculty will be shared and discussed, as well as how institutions are using the outcomes to improve the consistency and impact of their student success courses. Finally, we will discuss the continuing professional development needs identified by faculty to support successful implementation of the learning outcomes.

Derek Moore is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life at Arkansas State University, Mid-South. Prior to this, Dr. Moore served as Director of Academic Advising and Career Services at the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton, where he also served as chair of the colleges Retention Committee. Additionally, Dr. Moore served as a student success coach and instructor of FYS courses at Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock, Arkansas. During his time at Pulaski Technical College, Dr. Moore co-chaired the institutional research advisory committee and was a member of the Achieving the Dream initiative. He has also provided professional development workshops for faculty and staff, community groups, youth programs, and workforce associations. Additionally, Dr. Moore has developed curriculum, taught, and assessed summer bridge programs for underprepared students. He has led a Common Reader initiative, which involved faculty from across disciplines. In addition, Dr. Moore is currently serving as project director for Arkansas Community Colleges, focusing on common learning outcomes for first-year success courses. He has served on a statewide committee helping to develop curriculum for a Community College Leadership doctoral program.
Dr. Moore has contributed to and presented at numerous venues (local, statewide, & National) focusing on student success. For the past four years, he has presented at the annual The First Year Experience conference highlighting strategies for men of color. He has been a selected speaker for the HBCUs Connected: Executive Leadership. Dr. Moore has been a contributing author on customized textbooks for student success courses. He co-authored a recently released book, The College Experience for Men of Color, which is being utilized throughout colleges and universities nationwide.
His educational background: bachelor of science (B.S.) in Psychology from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, master of public administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and doctorate (EdD) in community college leadership from Morgan State University. His dissertation was titled The Relationship Between Environmental Mediators and Intrapersonal Factors for Men of Color in Community Colleges.

Mike Leach is the Director of the Center for Student Success at the Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges. The Center supports Arkansas two-year colleges in adopting institutional innovations aimed at improving student success, and works to establish a federal and state policy environment supportive of student success.
Mike has developed and managed a variety of institutional reform projects in partnership with Arkansas two-year colleges, including a statewide TAACCT grant and the nationally recognized Arkansas Career Pathways initiative. These projects are driving cutting edge innovation at the college level in virtually every facet of college operations, including developmental education and academic program redesign, changes in advising and student support services, and institutional research capacity building. Mike also has been an adjunct instructor for American National Government at Pulaski Technical College since 2003.
Mike has extensive experience in public policy development and advocacy, working as the Government Relations Director at Southern Bancorp, a community organizer with the Industrial Areas Foundation, and a Legislative Aide for United States Senator Harris Wofford.
Mike has a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Maryland at College Park, and a M.A. in Educational Administration, Policy and Planning from the University of Texas at Austin.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
- We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
- We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
- On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

What equipment is required?
For individual or small group viewing, a computer with a reliable Internet connection and audio capabilities are all that’s needed. For large group presentations, we recommend a computer with a reliable Internet connection and speakers, as well as an LCD projector. Participants can call in via phone if they are having trouble retrieving the audio over the computer. Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.
