Going off to college presents multiple challenges for students. For residential students, they confront physical separation from their support network back home. Commuter students have new logistical concerns to tackle. All students have to learn to navigate the unfamiliar demands of higher education. They quickly come face-to-face with academic and non-academic challenges.
They can wait/depend on the college to provide road signs for what to do. Effective events like campus orientation introduce students to people, resources, and processes available for their benefit. We tell them what office, person, or website link to visit. Do we also spend time helping them develop strategies to advocate for themselves? When they feel disconnected and lost, do they have the tools to authentically speak up for what they need? This webinar will focus on four areas critical for understanding and promoting student self-advocacy: Connections, Disconnections, Future Me, and Seven Core Values for Success.
Connections. Meaningful and authentic relationships provide a foundation for our lives. Without relationships what do we have? Do your students understand with whom to connect, how to appropriately do that, and when to make those connections? We will examine how to help students form their own “educational P.A.C.” Not the kind that raises money for political candidates. Rather, one that helps students adjust and thrive in their school community. Whether they suffer from homesickness, feel challenged by a particular course, or have difficulties with classmates, a triumvirate of campus connections that have immense potential to connect them with relevant resources for success and movement toward their goals. Strategies will include how to make authentic connections with professors and tap into the navigation skills of student affairs. We will also look at how students can “audition” their classmates for inevitable times when they will need to form groups to complete an assignment.
Disconnections. Students come to campus with various goals tied to health, a college major, roommate selection, or something else relevant to their lives. We also know that they can become easily “distracted” and stray from their goals. They may even feel lost when it comes to passion and purpose. At these times of disconnection, how do we help students help themselves get back on track (or find the track for the first time)? We have to go beyond telling them to “find your passion.” Let’s help them examine what they value, where they invest their time and the disconnections between the two. We also will examine how their P.A.C.s (above) can help sort things out. Webinar participants also will examine a strategy the facilitator calls “The Second R.E.A.D.” First-year students and more senior students will find these strategies practical.
Future Me. When students arrive on campus they may or may not know with specificity where they are headed. They might be a bit (a lot) confused. They want to find a major—a career—to pursue. Rather than force themselves to “find their passion” why not find help them discover what they are curious about? How can we help them stay curious about all of their courses—even those that seem totally remote to what they find interesting? How can they stay curious about events and issues around campus? Once they discover (or rediscover) their curiosity who knows where it may lead. Their priorities may change. Webinar participants will examine how they can help students pay attention to the “weak signals” indicating what may be in their future.
Seven Core Values for Success. All of the above tie into seven key interlocking and guiding principles for life success. These core values can provide a compass to help in times of difficulties and challenge. We will briefly examine how to bring these core values into class, advising sessions, the residence halls, and co-curricular activities.
Note: Each webinar participant will receive Steve’s ‘Seven Core Values for Purpose and Growth.’ It is suitable for framing and posting in your office, classroom, and home. You can present it to students as a beginning or end of semester gift.

Steve Piscitelli is a recognized teacher, author and workshop facilitator. Steve draws on (33) years of classroom and professional development experience to connect with his audience on a practical level. He “retired” from Florida State College at Jacksonville in 2015 and remains actively involved with faculty and administrator training across the nation. Additionally, he writes a weekly blog and produces a monthly podcast channel, both of which address the topics of growth and resilience.
His eleventh book, Stories about Teaching, Learning, and Resilience: No Need to be an Island, encourages educators to embrace the power of collaboration. Thirty-seven scenarios—based on real educational issues—bring The Seven Rs of Success to life.
Steve has written two student success books (both in their 3rd edition with Pearson Education). The University of Texas/NISOD has published five of his articles addressing basic principles of teaching and learning success.
In 2015, Florida State College at Jacksonville named Steve as one of the "Fabulous 50." Nominated by students, this recognition honored "talented and dedicated faculty and staff.” Steve also received special recognition from Jacksonville University with the addition of his name to the list of "Alumni You Ought to Know."
In 2014, Steve delivered a TEDx talk: “Awareness, Assumptions and Actions: Why Do You Do What You Do?”

What is a live webinar?
A live webinar is an interactive online training. Participants can communicate with the presenter(s) during the event via a live chat feature.
What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can be accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You typically receive a link to the recording and handouts within 24 hours of registration. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
How long are the webinars?
Webinars can be 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Please check each training for the exact timeframe.

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
- We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
- We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
- On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
What are the technical requirements?

What equipment is required?
For individual or small group viewing, a computer with a reliable Internet connection and audio capabilities are all that’s needed. For large group presentations, we recommend a computer with a reliable Internet connection and speakers, as well as an LCD projector. Participants can call in via phone if they are having trouble retrieving the audio over the computer. Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.

Which workshops are your top rated?
We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.
Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. Is there an admin view?
This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.
