Sexual Assault Prevention Best Practices: Bystander Intervention & The Social Norms Approach

Sexual assault is a well-documented problem in higher education and campus professionals are under pressure to develop effective prevention programs. This series provides an overview of the ‘state of the art’ in sexual assault prevention, drawing from extensive research, program evaluations and case studies.
Two effective science-based best practices that will be given special attention are bystander intervention and the social norms approach as both have been strongly supported by research and evaluation as promising and effective. The bystander intervention approach provides skills to community members to notice and intervene in risky situations. The social norms approach is used to identify misperceptions of attitudes and behaviors which serve to inhibit bystander intervention, blame victims, and justify assault. The latest research suggests that a combination of these two approaches is most effective, as the two together create synergy and are mutually reinforcing, with norms-correction serving to reduce some of the primary barriers to bystander intervention.
Designing prevention programs which utilize these two approaches together will serve to engage the whole community in preventing assault, foster effective bystander intervention, and inhibit perpetrators. In addition to relevant theory and research, an overview of bystander intervention skills that can be tailored to different situations and individuals is presented.

Effective sexual assault prevention for the Greek community requires a tailored approached that takes into consideration the special circumstances of Greek life and the unique challenges. This session will focus on applying both bystander intervention and the social norms approach to the Greek Life setting. The social norms approach in particular is well suited to this peer-intensive community because it provides normative feedback about healthy, unrecognized norms, to the community itself, and also because many problem events take place in the presence of peers who are able to intervene.

Alan Berkowitz is an independent consultant who helps colleges, universities, public health agencies, military organizations, and communities design programs that address health and social justice issues. His expert opinion is frequently sought after by the federal government, the United States military, and professional organizations and he is well-known for scholarship and innovative programs which address issues of substance abuse, sexual assault, gender, and diversity. He is the Editor and founder of The Report on Social Norms and is a highly regarded, award-winning speaker and trainer.
Dr. Berkowitz has over twenty-five years of experience in higher education as a trainer, psychologist, faculty member, and Counseling Center Director. At Hobart and William Smith Colleges he developed one of the first rape prevention programs for men in the United States for men, was co-director of the college's highly regarded Men and Masculinity Program and chaired the Prejudice Reduction Task Force. More recently, he has been a central figure in the development of Social Norms Theory, is a leader in research and implementation of the model and its application as a sexual assault prevention strategy, and has been a consultant for a number of highly successful social norms programs. In addition, he is an expert in bystander intervention theory and skills and has written a book on this topic. He also works with the military, state sexual assault coalitions, non-profit organizations, and higher education institutions. His lecture and workshop topics include: changing campus, community and base culture, effective drug and sexual assault prevention strategies, reducing prejudice, racial identity theory, multicultural issues, alcohol and sexual assault, men's responsibility for preventing sexual assault, developing alliances across differences, and understanding today's youth. His workshops are designed to increase the personal and professional effectiveness of faculty, staff, student leaders, athletes and coaches, health professionals, military leaders and service members, and community members.
Dr. Berkowitz received the Ph.D. in Psychology from Cornell University in 1981 and is a New York State licensed Psychologist. He has received awards from a number of national organizations, including the "Outstanding Service Award" from the Network of Colleges and Universities Committed to the Elimination of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (for his significant lifetime contribution to the field of alcohol and drug prevention) and the Miguel Garcia-Tunon Memorial Award for Human Dignity from the American College Health Association (which is given to an individual whose life, writing, research, or way of living has promoted the cause of human dignity and the appreciation of human differences.) In addition, he is a Fellow of the American College Health Association, has been recognized by the American College Personnel Association for his "Outstanding Contributions to Men's Issues and for "Outstanding Alcohol prevention and Education Initiatives," and is a sexual assault prevention Subject Matter Expert for the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and National Guard.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. How long are the webinars?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
- We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
- We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
- On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.
