As campus climates change so must the strategies employed to reach students. While campus-based, face-to-face programming provides quality touch-points with individuals, innovative behavioral health technology is increasingly used for both large-scale information dissemination and individual-level intervention. 

In this webinar, the presenter will begin with an overview of the benefits that anonymous online mental health screenings can bring to a campus through broadening outreach to all students and meeting them where they are, that is, online. Offering mental health screenings raises campus awareness about mental health disorders, educates students and administrators about symptoms and resources, and connects those in need to quality treatment available to them on campus and the broader community. Participants will look at screening data collected from the 2014-2015 academic year from colleges across the country that implemented mental health screenings on their campuses.

The presenter will move on to discuss the mental health screening kiosk that has been installed at the recreation center on Drexel University's campus in Philadelphia and will outline how the kiosk works as a freestanding tool, as well as a component of a larger prevention and education approach within the university.

Joanna Karbel is the Program Manager for the CollegeResponse screening and education program. She rejoined the team at Screening for Mental Health (SMH) in January 2013. She had worked there previously as the Program Coordinator for the CollegeResponse program.

Joanna left SMH in 2009 to pursue her Master of Science Degree in College Student Development and Counseling at Northeastern University. During her time in school and after graduating, she worked as an academic advisor at both MassBay Community College and Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Her experiences in the classroom and on college campuses strengthened her concern about the social, emotional, and transitional hurdles that many college students are up against, not to mention their demanding academic responsibilities. These concerns led to her return to the CollegeResponse program to support colleges and universities in their efforts toward early detection of depression, eating disorders and alcohol problems.


Molly Foulds is the Program Manager for the MindKare program. She joined the CommunityResponse team at Screening for Mental Health (SMH) in February 2012, before moving to the MindKare program in May 2015 when it began. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Human Services from Northeastern University. Before her time at SMH, she worked as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer in Wyoming and New Hampshire.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?

When do I register?

You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.

What is the process for attending a live event?

The process is as follows:

  • We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
  • We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
  • We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
  • On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
  • We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?

Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

What are the technical requirements?

Innovative Educators uses WebEx as its web conferencing provider. If you have not previously attended a WebEx event, please Join a Test Meeting to make sure your computer is compatible with WebEx. What equipment is required?

For individual or small group viewing, a computer with a reliable Internet connection and audio capabilities are all that’s needed. For large group presentations, we recommend a computer with a reliable Internet connection and speakers, as well as an LCD projector. Participants can call in via phone if they are having trouble retrieving the audio over the computer. Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.
