Investigating The Drunken Hook-Up: Policy Development Concerning Sexual Assault, Incapacitation & Risk Management

This took the form of a highly publicized public service announcement featuring Benicio Del Toro, Dul Hill, Steve Carrell, Daniel Craig, Seth Meyers, Vice President Biden, and President Obama. Additionally, the Office for Civil Rights released 53 more pages on how to comply with Title IX, and yet, Brett Sokolow, president and CEO of The NCHERM Group, thinks many campuses can do better when dealing with drunken hook-ups between students.

Dr. Brian Van Brunt, past president of the American College Counseling Association, is Senior Vice President for Professional Development Programs at the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NHCERM, www.ncherm.org). He is the president of the National Behavioral Intervention Team Association (NaBITA, www.nabita.org) and the managing editor for Student Affairs eNews (SAeN, www.studentaffairsenews.com). Over the past fifteen years Brian has taught counseling theory, ethics, program evaluation, statistics and sociology topics at both public and private schools for both graduate and undergraduate students at five different colleges and universities. Brian has served as the director of counseling at New England College and Western Kentucky University. He is the author of several books including: Harm to Others: The Assessment and Treatment of Dangerousness, Ending Campus Violence: New Approaches in Prevention and A Faculty Guide to Addressing Disruptive and Dangerous Behavior in the Classroom. Brian is an expert on mental health and campus violence and has been interviewed by the New York Times, National Public Radio, LA Times, USA Today and has appeared on Headline News and Anderson Cooper 360.
Rick Olshak has been a student affairs professional since 1990 and currently serves as an associate dean of students at Illinois State University in Normal, IL, where he is also completing his doctorate degree in educational administration and foundations. Rick is an affiliated consultant for the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NCHERM), and is the co-chair of NCHERMs practice group for conflict resolution, also known as NCHERM-CR. Rick is a past president of the Association for Student Conduct Administration (ASCA),, and currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the Association of Title IX Administrators (ATIXA). Ricks areas of professional expertise include conflict resolution, mediation, student conduct administration, program and needs assessment, training conduct boards and hearing officers, sanctioning student misconduct, student organization investigations, and addressing Title IX allegations (sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, and relationship violence).

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
- We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
- We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
- On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

Participants can call in via phone if they are having trouble retrieving the audio over the computer. Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.
