Academic advising is increasingly recognized as being one of the keys to fostering successful retention-to-graduation. At most institutions, this critical process has traditionally been pursued through the use of individual advising conferences. The diversity, sheer volume, and technological orientation of today’s students make it increasingly challenging to implement effective academic advising through this singular approach. This webinar will address the challenges and the opportunities of moving to online group advising, allowing institutions and students to benefit from the experience.

This webinar will cover the essential components of a successful online academic advising program geared toward serving multiple students. The primary focus will be on how those components can be integrated to accentuate the advantages of individual virtual advising. The goal is to develop and maintain an advising relationship with a group of students using an online platform with all the features of a face-to-face conference. Making the transition from individual online (or face-to-face) advising sessions to those involving small groups of students in a virtual platform can be challenging. At the same time, there are opportunities for peer support and mentoring that are not possible in an individual advising session – regardless of whether the interaction is face-to-face or virtual.

Indeed, advanced technologies are moving academic advising into the virtual world, where students can access the guidance they need anytime and anywhere. However, moving to this brave new world presents several challenges for advisors who have traditionally employed individual conferences as their primary delivery method. Financial resources have become more scarce in many institutions. At the same time, demands have become more acute. Online advising has become more pervasive – and we are just beginning to explore the full potential of online advising with multiple participants. Online group advising offers faculty, staff, and other professionals a way to do more with less while increasing retention and enhancing completion rates. When implemented conscientiously and correctly, it can create a synergy that is both high tech and high touch. Opportunities for participant involvement through case studies and real-time feedback via chat will also be used to enhance the learning experience.

    Dr. Aaron Hughey

    Dr. Aaron W. Hughey is a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs at Western Kentucky University, where he oversees the graduate degree program in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Before joining the faculty in 1991, he spent 10 years in progressive administrative positions, including five years as the Associate Director of University Housing at WKU. He was also head of the department of Counseling and Student Affairs for five years before returning to the faculty full-time in 2008. Dr. Hughey has degrees from the University of Tennessee at Martin, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Western Kentucky University, and Northern Illinois University. He has authored (or co-authored) over 70 refereed publications on a wide range of issues including leadership and student development, standardized testing, diversity, legal issues (including compliance), technology, and educational administration. He regularly presents at national and international conferences and consults extensively with companies and schools. He also provides training and professional development programs on a variety of topics centered on student success; academic advising is one of his specialties.

    A live webinar is an interactive online training. Participants can communicate with the presenter(s) during the event via a live chat feature.

    What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?

    An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can be accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You typically receive a link to the recording and handouts within 24 hours of registration.  The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

    How long are the webinars?

    Webinars can be 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Please check each training for the exact timeframe.

    How do I register?

    When do I register?

    You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.

    What is the process for attending a live event?

    The process is as follows:

    • We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
    • We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
    • We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
    • On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
    • We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
    Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?

    Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

    What are the technical requirements?

    What equipment is required?

    For individual or small group viewing, a computer with a reliable Internet connection and audio capabilities are all that’s needed. For large group presentations, we recommend a computer with a reliable Internet connection and speakers, as well as an LCD projector. Participants can call in via phone if they are having trouble retrieving the audio over the computer. Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.

    Which workshops are your top rated?

    Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?

    Is there an admin view?

    This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.
