Much has been discussed lately regarding the legal and policy issues related to managing suicidal students on campus following the federal Office of Civil Rights (OCR) policy update. However, there is another important component to consider what to do about those students who present a risk to others based on their paranoid, delusional, or psychotic symptoms. This webinar will discuss the issues and review how these students should be treated under the recent federal OCR policy changes.
Jason Ebbeling, J. D., will discuss issues related to legal risk when managing these students through the conduct, application, and re-entry process at both community and four-year residential colleges. Dr. Brian Van Brunt will review the common treatment and management struggles encountered when addressing students exhibiting psychotic, delusional, and paranoid thoughts and behaviors.
Case examples and a lively, interactive discussion will provide audience members with some insight into how these cases should be handled on campus, how students can be successfully referred to treatment, and some of the limits related to conduct and medical leave sanctions under the new OCR policy.

Dr. Brian Van Brunt,past president of the American College Counseling Association, is Senior Vice President for Professional Development Programs at the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NHCERM, www.ncherm.org). He is the president of the National Behavioral Intervention Team Association (NaBITA, www.nabita.org) and the managing editor for Student Affairs eNews (SAeN, www.studentaffairsenews.com). Over the past fifteen years Brian has taught counseling theory, ethics, program evaluation, statistics and sociology topics at both public and private schools for both graduate and undergraduate students at five different colleges and universities. Brian has served as the director of counseling at New England College and Western Kentucky University. He is the author of several books including: Harm to Others: The Assessment and Treatment of Dangerousness, Ending Campus Violence: New Approaches in Prevention and A Faculty Guide to Addressing Disruptive and Dangerous Behavior in the Classroom. Brian is an expert on mental health and campus violence and has been interviewed by the New York Times, National Public Radio, LA Times, USA Today and has appeared on Headline News and Anderson Cooper 360.
Jason Ebbeling, J.D., is Vice President of Student Affairs at Mitchell College in New London, Connecticut. He previously served as Director of Residential Education and Services at Southern Oregon University, Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Menlo College in Atherton, CA, Director of Campus Life at New England College, Residence Community Coordinator at California State University, Chico, and as Director of Residence Life at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. He completed doctoral coursework in Educational Administration at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received a Juris Doctorate from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online for faculty and staff to access anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You typically receive a link to the recording and handouts within 24 hours of registration.

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
- We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
- We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
- On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

What equipment is required?
For individual or small group viewing, a computer with a reliable Internet connection and audio capabilities are all that’s needed. For large group presentations, we recommend a computer with a reliable Internet connection and speakers, as well as an LCD projector. Participants can call in via phone if they are having trouble retrieving the audio over the computer. Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.
