In higher education, there is an excellent potential for leveraging technology to enhance the work of student success faculty and professionals, while engaging diverse populations of Generation Z students.
Higher education professionals are met with multiple challenges in supporting first-year and at-risk students. There is a perennial challenge of faculty balancing student success pedagogy with their course content. Indeed, those developing first-year and student success courses experience the dilemma of integrating student success components with faculty content. Further, those experts who work in student support areas of institutions are notoriously stretched thin. When many higher education professionals are dividing their time among multiple priorities, it can be not very easy to engage with students who need support effectively.
Simultaneously, there has been a growing awareness of how generational differences among faculty, staff and students impact the teaching and learning environment. Different generations have different expectations surrounding how we teach and how we learn. Today in higher education, there is great potential for leveraging technology to supplement the teaching of FYE faculty, enhance the work of student success professionals, and engage diverse populations of Generation Z students.
As Generation Z students come to college campuses, the role of technology should be considered in supporting their success in crucial ways. First, research shows that student success requires the early formation of relationships with faculty, staff, and peers (Tinto in Spann, 1990; Tinto, 1993; Heisserer & Parette, 2002). While traditional approaches have relied on face-to-face orientation programs and first-year seminars to sow the seeds of such connections, technology can also be leveraged to foster belongingness (Tinto, 1993; Heisserer & Parette, 2002).
Research on Generation Z also provides insights into their learning needs and preferences; effective use of technology by student success professionals can enhance Generation Z students’ learning experiences. Generation Z students “are comfortable with and like being able to learn independently and at their own pace” (Seemiller and Grace, 2016, p.178). These students don’t necessarily feel that they need to engage in-person to learn. They are comfortable with using technology as part of their learning experience, which is why the flipped classroom approach is particularly effective with Generation Z students (Seemiller and Grace, 2016). This flipped model can be leveraged for a variety of student engagement opportunities beyond the classroom.
Focusing on the needs of our Generation Z students and on the use of technology to meet these needs provides practitioners with some new approaches. Using learning management systems and other technology to support students with the transition from high school to college can help students connect with crucial campus resources and more readily adjust to college. Further, this use of technology allows for personalization and adaptation for special student populations, including first-generation college students, international students, transfer students, and students in academic difficulty. Students have just-in-time access to information and resources beyond the availability of traditional physical office space and their staff, supplementing and supporting the work of the first-year experience faculty and learning professionals.
In this webinar, the presenters will discuss strategies for utilizing technology to enhance success for first-year and at-risk students. Through learning management systems, as well as online courses and resources, students can connect with information and learning opportunities when and where they need it. Social media technology can also be used effectively to encourage students to engage with the support to enhance their academic experience. Laurie L. Hazard is the Assistant Dean for Student Success at Bryant University in Smithfield, RI. As a member of the Applied Psychology Department, she writes about parent involvement, student personality types and classroom success. She is an award-winning expert on how students can make successful transitions from high school to college. After earning her Master’s of Education degree from Boston University in counseling, she received a Doctoral degree from Boston University in Curriculum and Teaching. Laurie is co-author of the book Foundations for Learning, 3rd Edition (2012, Prentice Hall), which is designed to help students make a successful transition to college by encouraging them to take responsibility for and claim their own education. Hazard’s textbook has been adopted by colleges and universities around the country, including Boston University, University of Nevada, and Texas A&M. Richard J. Light, the Walter H. Gale Professor of Education at Harvard University, calls Hazard’s book “a winner for any college student” that is a “beautifully written joy to read.”
Laurie has won numerous awards for her work with first-year students and their parents, including the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition’s Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate; the Learning Assistance Association of New England’s Outstanding Research and Publication Award; and the Learning Assistance Association of New England’s Outstanding Service to Developmental Students Award. Most recently, Laurie received the CRLA Northeast’s Outstanding Service to the Field of Developmental Education Award.
Laurie’s expertise has garnered national media attention. She has been interviewed and cited as an expert in the Associated Press, Seventeen Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, The Times Picayune, The San Diego Tribune, and Student Affairs Leader. Laurie has also been a guest columnist for the Washington Post’s Answer Sheet: A School Survival Guide for Parents (And Everyone Else). Her articles offer concrete advice for parents of new college students: “How to Help Your Child Adapt to College Life,” and “Parents Should Leave their Kids Alone at College.” Most recently, Laurie has written a book with co-presenter Stephanie Carter, called Your Freshman Is Off To College (2016).

What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:

Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. Is there an admin view?
