Participants will learn about collective impact and how a four-county region is leveraging collective impact on increase cradle to career educational outcomes. The webinar will provide an overview of collective impact and examples of high impact strategies developed and implemented to increase the metrics adopted by the leaders to measure progress.
Many communities struggle with building authentic partnerships through cross-sector engagement utilizing collective impact as the framework for working together.

Traditional partnerships are built around solving a problem or issue that leads to isolated impact that may or may not lead to long-term systems change. Today’s educational ecosystem requires that we go beyond the usual suspects to facilitate high-impact changes in policies and practices that lead to increased student outcomes. This webinar will introduce participants to how a four-county region is leveraging collective impact to move from disconnected, isolated strategies to aligned strategies that are moving the needle in cradle to career metrics. Collective impact is a framework that focuses on bringing members from different sectors within a community together to drive large-scale social change. In order for the framework to be effective, the collaborative must meet five conditions: 1) Common Agenda, 2) Common Progress Measures, 3) Mutually Reinforcing Activities, 4) Communications, and 5) Backbone Organizations.
This webinar will include one community’s journey in establishing these five conditions and the substantial impact the community has seen in moving the cradle to career metrics. One such example is increasing FAFSA (financial aid application) completions from 56% to 75% over a three-year period through authentic collaboration, which led to changing local policies and practices while also influencing a change in federal policy. Participants will go away with tools and resources that can support their efforts in strengthening partnerships in their respective communities.

Moving from Analysis to Action requires an understanding of the existing data literacy of leaders and their respective organizations. Building data literacy among cross-sector partners requires an intentional strategy of engagement and empowerment. This webinar will discuss how a collective impact community leverages design thinking to plan high impact collaborative meetings that include intentional engagement strategies that assist leaders in making sense of data and move collectively towards action. Examples of these tools include the use of data walks, placemats, think-pair-share, world café, and other engagement protocols that empower leaders to move beyond data denial to data acceptance to problem-solving to strategy development to strategy assessment to institutionalization. Identifying the relevant engagement strategy is dependent on understanding the goal for the convening of a group. There are three goals/reasons why we bring people together: 1) promote greater awareness and understanding; 2) generate new ideas and/or solutions; and 3) make a decision (FSG 2017). The key to successfully meeting the goal for the convening is to understand which engagement strategy will accomplish the goal for the convening. Participants can expect to leave with a greater understanding of how intentional planning and engagement can lead to high-impact strategies that move the needle on cradle to career metrics.

Collective impact is a powerful framework for engaging cross-sector leaders to drive large scale social change.
Dr. Luzelma G. Canales is executive director for RGV FOCUS, a collaboration with Educate Texas. Luzelma provides leadership for a large-scale collective impact initiative launched to transform college readiness, access, and success across a four-county region in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. The collaborative is comprised of over forty partners including four postsecondary institutions, eleven school districts, two workforce boards, private funders, and numerous community based organizations and nonprofits. Luzelma served as a community college and university administrator for over twenty-five years. She led numerous institutional community college national reform initiatives including Achieving the Dream, Breaking Through, and several with Excelencia in Education. Luzelma serves on local, state and national boards related to closing equity gaps in voter turnout and educational attainment. She was born and raised along the Texas-Mexico border in deep South Texas. She and her family migrated to Washington and Oregon to work in the fields during the 1960s and 1970s. Her lived experience includes participating in the integration of schools and witnessing the efforts of the United Farm Workers to bring to light concerns over working conditions of migrant farm workers. These and other experiences formed her commitment to work with organizations to identify and eliminate barriers that are faced by Latino students as they navigate the high school and college experience. Luzelma earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Pan American University, master’s in business administration from the University of Texas – Pan American, and doctorate of philosophy in human resource development from Texas A&M University.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
- We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
- We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
- On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

What equipment is required?

Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (48 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. Is there an admin view?
This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.
