Frontline faculty and staff, including student employees in areas such as residence life, often are privy to information in student records that points to pending tragedies, such as the one that occurred 15 years ago at VTU. When frontliners don't know what can and cannot be shared under FERPA regs,they sometimes inadvertently reveal information about students that these faculty and staff don't even recognize as qualifying as student records.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act seems simple enough on the surface: protect student records from illegitimate exposure while permitting students (and sometimes parents) access to those records. But, unfortunately, frontline faculty and staff are often unaware of those crucial details. This webinar seeks to plug that knowledge gap.
Everyone in higher education knows about FERPA, but many educators don’t fully understand the ins and outs of this statute and its complex regulations. This webinar provides a concise but comprehensive overview of FERPA basics. The day-to-day demands on our faculty and staff to walk the tightrope between preserving student-record confidentiality and sharing data is vital to our university communities' health and safety. April 2007 was a watershed moment in the history of FERPA. The tragic shootings at Virginia Technical University shined a spotlight on the tragic potential inherent in siloed information. That seminal event led the U.S. Department of Education to issue a landmark "Dear Colleague" letter that explained what FERPA required and what it allowed.
In the following decade and a half, all colleges and universities have developed student welfare committees or similar innovations for sharing student information vital to health & safety at the same time. In addition, robust institutional websites, social media platforms, and learning platforms have made it easier than ever for untrained faculty and staff on the frontlines to step on FERPA landmines inadvertently. Knowing the FERPA basics and understanding what can and should be shared while also recognizing FERPA's boundaries is key to walking this regulatory tightrope. And that's the goal at the core of this webinar.

Dr. Jim Castagnera holds an M.A. in Journalism from Kent State University, and a J.D.and Ph.D. (American Studies) from Case Western Reserve University. He worked 10 years as a labor, employment, and intellectual-property attorney with Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr and 23 years as associate provost & legal counsel for academic affairs at Rider University, where in 2018 he received the university’s highest annual award for distinguished service. He also did stints as a full-time law professor at UT-Austin and Widener University Law School. Having retired from Rider in 2019, he is engaged in a portfolio of activities: Chief Consultant of Holland Media Services, a public relations firm with offices in Philadelphia and Los Angeles; Partner with Portum Group International LLC, a compliance consulting firm in Philadelphia; Of Counsel to WIBC Law; an Adjunct Professor of Law in the Kline School at Law at Drexel University, and an arbitrator for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

What is a live webinar?

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can be accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- You will receive the login information within 5 minutes of registering for the webinar.
- The presentation materials will be available before the live event. Please check the link in the login information email.
- On the day of the live event, participants can log in 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
What are the technical requirements?

Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. Is there an admin view?
This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.
