National surveys seeking to assess the effectiveness of academic advising programs rank advisor training and professional development as one of the least effective components. Effective academic advising programs are dependent on three critical components: comprehensive pre-service and continuous in-service advisor development; assessment of the advising program and evaluation of individual advisors; and recognition and reward for exemplary performance. Professional development is the foundation upon which evaluation and recognition and reward rest. Without setting expectations and offering skills training, there are no benchmarks for evaluation; and without evaluation there are no benchmarks for improving programs and recognizing and rewarding advisors. This webinar will examine the common elements that are applicable to faculty advisors, professional advisors, counselors, and others who advise students.
Understanding & Applying The 10 Dimensions Of Developmental Advising

Prior to 1972, there were few definitions of academic advising and virtually all of those definitions focused only on the selection and scheduling of classes. Many suggest that the seminal year for academic advising came in 1972 with the publication of articles by Burns Crookston and Terry O’Banion. O’Banion offered a paradigm for academic advising as a five-stage process which included the exploration of student skills and abilities and the relationship of those characteristics to the world of work and the choice of an educational program. Such exploration culminated in the selection and scheduling of courses. In his article, Crookston suggested that the advising relationship could be far more than an advisor ‘prescribing’ a course of action to be dutifully followed by the student. He articulated 10 dimensions and contrasted the prescriptive approach with what he termed ‘developmental advising.’ Understanding and application of prescriptive and developmental advising are the primary focus of this webinar.
Many individuals who advise students still believe that academic advising involves an institution-centre approach: the efficient selection and scheduling of courses to conform to a predetermined set of courses leading to a degree. This webinar will stimulate dialogue and discussion of a student-centered approach to advising.
Assessing The Effectiveness Of Your Academic Advising Programs

This session will introduce the processes involved in the assessment of academic advising. It will include rationale for assessment and definitions of assessment terminology. In addition, a five-stage model for assessment will be discussed. The model includes:

Thomas Brown is a lifelong student and academic affairs educator with an impressive record of effectiveness in creating academic and student affairs programs that promote increased learning, achievement, and success. Tom served as Dean of Advising Services/Special Program at Saint Mary's College of California, was a member of the Board of Directors and Vice President of the National Academic Advising Association, and was chairperson of the Prelaw Advisors National Council. Tom is currently Managing Principal of a consulting network that assists campuses to increase student success, build inclusive communities, and manage change ( www.tbrownassociates.com). He also writes an occasional column, The Advising Dean, for The St. Helena Star newspaper in California's Napa Valley ( http://napavalleyregister.com/star/).
His work is based on an integration of theories, research findings, and practical experience that makes a real difference for individuals and institutions.

Dr. Wes Habley currently serves as senior consultant with Thomas Brown Associates after retiring as Assistant Vice President for Strategic Partnerships at ACT, Inc. On his retirement, Habley was awarded ACT's first Lifetime Achievement Award. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and his Masters Degree in Student Development from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign. His doctorate in higher education administration was earned at Illinois State University where he was recently inducted into the College of Education Hall of Fame. Habley has more than 50 published works on academic advising and student retention. His most recent publications include Increasing Persistence: Research-based Strategies for College Student Success (2012), Academic Advising: a comprehensive handbook (2000, 2008), Status of Academic Advising (2004) and What Works in Student Retention in (2004, 2010). He has delivered more than 200 presentations at professional meetings and has served as a consultant or workshop leader at more than 125 colleges in the US, Canada, and the Middle East. Habley is a founding Board member of NACADA and served as President and Treasurer. He served for 22 years as the Director of the Summer Institute on Academic Advising and is the recipient of NACADA's awards for service and for outstanding contributions to the field of advising.
Tom Grites has served as Director of Academic Advising, Interim Director of Teacher Education, Interim Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and currently as Assistant Provost for Academic Support in his 40-plus years at Stockton. He currently has responsibilities for academic Orientation programming, First-Year Experience efforts, transfer student initiatives, liaison with the Division of Student Affairs, and various other projects. He also teaches regularly - a seminar course for new transfer students.
He was one of the founding members of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and served as its President for two terms. He currently serves as a Senior Editor of the NACADA Journal and regularly provides other services to NACADA.
Dr. Grites has written over 75 journal articles, book chapters, and professional reports; he has delivered more than 150 conference presentations; and he has conducted faculty development workshops and academic advising program reviews on over 100 campuses. He has served on the Absecon Board of Education for over 30 years.
Tom earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Illinois State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. Both institutions have awarded him their distinguished Alumni Awards, and he was inducted into the College of Education Hall of Fame at Illinois State in October 2007. Tom was recognized with a Transfer Champion award at the 2015 conference of the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?

When do I register?

What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
- We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
- We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
- On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.

Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?

What equipment is required?

Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.

Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (48 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. Is there an admin view?
