Reaching men of color during their first year of college is essential to secure the academic future of the United States. According to the College Board Advocacy and Policy Center, If present levels of education and current population trends hold, the United States will see a decline in the educational attainment of the country as a whole. The goal of ensuring the future global competitiveness of the U.S. cannot be met without the full participation of our nation's young men of color.

This webinar will present methods for implementing a targeted First-Year Experience Success Course for Men of Color. By rearranging course content based on student self-assessments, and using tools such as a Common Reader targeted toward the interests and needs of the students, co-curricular activities, a customized textbook, and study and accountability teams, colleges can be more successful in capturing this high-risk group during a vulnerable stage of life. We will cover the history and expansion of a First-Year Experience Success Course for African-American males. Participants will gain information about the unique features of this program that promotes engagement and success. We will discuss national data gathered for assessment purposes, including attendance, test scores, timeliness, quality of assignments, class preparation, retention, and grades. We will also compare the success of students enrolled in this specialized course compared to students enrolled in the regular First-Year Experience Course.

Derek Moore is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life at Arkansas State University, Mid-South. Prior to this, Dr. Moore served as Director of Academic Advising and Career Services at the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton, where he also served as chair of the colleges Retention Committee. Additionally, Dr. Moore served as a student success coach and instructor of FYS courses at Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock, Arkansas. During his time at Pulaski Technical College, Dr. Moore co-chaired the institutional research advisory committee and was a member of the Achieving the Dream initiative. He has also provided professional development workshops for faculty and staff, community groups, youth programs, and workforce associations. Additionally, Dr. Moore has developed curriculum, taught, and assessed summer bridge programs for underprepared students. He has led a Common Reader initiative, which involved faculty from across disciplines. In addition, Dr. Moore is currently serving as project director for Arkansas Community Colleges, focusing on common learning outcomes for first-year success courses. He has served on a statewide committee helping to develop curriculum for a Community College Leadership doctoral program.

Dr. Moore has contributed to and presented at numerous venues (local, statewide, & National) focusing on student success. For the past four years, he has presented at the annual The First Year Experience conference highlighting strategies for men of color. He has been a selected speaker for the HBCU's Connected: Executive Leadership. Dr. Moore has been a contributing author on customized textbooks for student success courses. He co-authored a recently released book, The College Experience for Men of Color, which is being utilized throughout colleges and universities nationwide.

His educational background: bachelor of science (B.S.) in Psychology from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, master of public administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and doctorate (EdD) in community college leadership from Morgan State University. His dissertation was titled The Relationship Between Environmental Mediators and Intrapersonal Factors for Men of Color in Community Colleges.

An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online for faculty and staff to access anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You typically receive a link to the recording and handouts within 24 hours of registration.

When do I register?

You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.

What is the process for attending a live event?

The process is as follows:

  • We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
  • We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
  • We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
  • On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
  • We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?

Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

What are the technical requirements?

Innovative Educators uses WebEx as its web conferencing provider. If you have not previously attended a WebEx event, please Join a Test Meeting to make sure your computer is compatible with WebEx. What equipment is required?

For individual or small group viewing, a computer with a reliable Internet connection and audio capabilities are all that’s needed. For large group presentations, we recommend a computer with a reliable Internet connection and speakers, as well as an LCD projector. Participants can call in via phone if they are having trouble retrieving the audio over the computer. Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.
