Creating An Effective Faculty Advising Program: How To Improve Student Success: 2-Part Workshop

In spite of the fact that faculty academic advising has the potential to become a central component in the delivery of quality services to students, its power is often unrealized by individuals in leadership positions on the college campus. National surveys find academic advising is second only to the quality of instruction among student priorities, while faculty surveyed at two- and four-year colleges overwhelmingly agree there is a relationship between advising and retention. Nevertheless, some individuals continue to view advising as a perfunctory and mundane process of helping students plan their class schedules. This session is intended to provide faculty members, decision makers, and resource allocators with a better understanding of the essential, multifaceted role faculty advisors play in student success and institutional effectiveness.
Part 1 of this 2-part workshop will focus on the critical nature of academic advising and affirm the importance of the role faculty play in its delivery. Part 2 will focus on best practices in support of faculty advisors.

Thomas Brown is a lifelong student and academic affairs educator with an impressive record of effectiveness in creating academic and student affairs programs that promote increased learning, achievement, and success. Tom served as Dean of Advising Services/Special Program at Saint Mary's College of California, was a member of the Board of Directors and Vice President of the National Academic Advising Association, and was chairperson of the Prelaw Advisors National Council. Tom is currently Managing Principal of a consulting network that assists campuses to increase student success, build inclusive communities, and manage change ( www.tbrownassociates.com). He also writes an occasional column, The Advising Dean, for The St. Helena Star newspaper in California's Napa Valley ( http://napavalleyregister.com/star/).
His work is based on an integration of theories, research findings, and practical experience that makes a real difference for individuals and institutions.

Dr. Wes Habley currently serves as senior consultant with Thomas Brown Associates after retiring as Assistant Vice President for Strategic Partnerships at ACT, Inc. On his retirement, Habley was awarded ACT's first Lifetime Achievement Award. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and his Masters Degree in Student Development from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign. His doctorate in higher education administration was earned at Illinois State University where he was recently inducted into the College of Education Hall of Fame. Habley has more than 50 published works on academic advising and student retention. His most recent publications include Increasing Persistence: Research-based Strategies for College Student Success (2012), Academic Advising: a comprehensive handbook (2000, 2008), Status of Academic Advising (2004) and What Works in Student Retention in (2004, 2010). He has delivered more than 200 presentations at professional meetings and has served as a consultant or workshop leader at more than 125 colleges in the US, Canada, and the Middle East. Habley is a founding Board member of NACADA and served as President and Treasurer. He served for 22 years as the Director of the Summer Institute on Academic Advising and is the recipient of NACADA's awards for service and for outstanding contributions to the field of advising.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
- We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
- We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
- On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

What equipment is required?
For individual or small group viewing, a computer with a reliable Internet connection and audio capabilities are all that’s needed. For large group presentations, we recommend a computer with a reliable Internet connection and speakers, as well as an LCD projector. Participants can call in via phone if they are having trouble retrieving the audio over the computer. Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.
