For many years, undocumented immigrants have stopped their education when they complete (or drop out of) high school. While many of these students want to go to college and get a degree, there are countless barriers preventing them from even considering applying. They instead end up in low paying work, thus continuing the cycle of poverty.

Some states have created pathways for undocumented immigrants to access higher education, while others have legislated regulations identifying them as non-residents subject to out-of-state tuition. But with 11+ million undocumented immigrants in the US, we need to have more than the current 5-10% who have graduated from high school move into college.

Many of these undocumented students were brought to the US when they were young and have succeeded in K-12 education. Having the opportunity to earn a Bachelor's degree allows them to obtain a family-sustaining job and contribute to their community.
So how do we change what we are doing that is creating so many barriers for undocumented immigrants, not only to access higher education but also to complete their educational goals? Learning how to identify and remove barriers is the first step to supporting these students to navigate college, persist through many competing priorities and be successful in completing their degree.

“Research continues to show that even in states with liberal policies about undocumented immigrants attending college, a very small percentage are actually taking advantage of the opportunities. At the same time, highly educated workers are needed to fill jobs in fast-growing fields. We need to remove barriers and invest in undocumented immigrants by supporting access to higher education and helping them to complete degrees that provide family sustaining careers.”
