Assessment Processes For Learning Assistance Programs: How To Plan For Evaluation & Improvement
Participants will gain an overview of assessment processes relevant to their learning assistance program’s services and explore ways to schedule evaluation efforts so that the entire program is effectively reviewed over the course of two or more years.
One of the notable challenges of evaluating learning assistance programs is gathering and analyzing the data, but perhaps a bigger problem is finding the time to do so. When programs provide multiple ways to support student learning, assessing the entire range of services requires substantial attention – especially at a time when increasing demands (including accreditation reviews) seem to press upon everyone’s schedules. Plus with potentially limited access to needed data, getting the information for evaluation may require building several collaborative partnerships. Consequently, being able to schedule the work of assessment and program evaluation over the course of two or more years makes program evaluation more possible.
Those of us who provide and manage learning assistance services do so much to help students succeed in higher education. We tutor and we offer workshops on how to read college textbooks and write properly documented research papers. We organize regular study groups and arrange test review sessions. We supervise and mentor numerous student workers, and we mentor each other. We do so much. In addition to these uses of our time, we also want to find out if our efforts are working, if we are successfully helping students become successful. And there are also outside pressures wanting to know those same things. But where do we find the time to evaluate all of our varied efforts? What evaluation methods are most effective at revealing our successes – and perhaps also letting us know how we could do even better?
During the webinar, we will review a range of learning assistance services that are commonly offered (e.g., one-on-one tutoring, structured review groups such as Supplemental Instruction, workshops) and note what kinds of processes are available for evaluating the effectiveness of such programs. We will consider both quantitative and qualitative methodologies and also look at established standards of excellence. Also, recognizing the time demands of program assessment, we will discuss how to schedule evaluation activities over the course of two or more years. The goal is to establish a practical and ongoing path toward program evaluation and improvement – a path that is thorough without being overwhelming.

Jan Norton’s experiences include over 25 years of developing and managing learning assistance services. She earned the NCLCA Lifetime Learning Center Leadership certification and was recently named a CLADEA Fellow. Always a strong advocate for pursuing program improvement through assessment and evaluation, her graduate degree in Educational Research allowed her to focus on both quantitative and qualitative methods. Other training and education include the Kellogg Institute, the Winter Institute, TIDE, NACADA training, NCLCA Summer Institute, and ACT Assessment Institute; she also served as a trainer for Winter and NCLCA institutes.
Jan has supported learning assistance and developmental education practitioners in a variety of ways. She reviewed certification applications for CRLA and NADE; she assisted programs as an evaluation consultant and an accreditation reviewer. As a longtime CRLA member, she led two SIGs: Learning Assistance Center Management and Research & Evaluation. Jan and Dr. Karen Agee wrote a commissioned White Paper for CRLA (“Assessment of Learning Assistance Programs: Supporting Professionals in the Field”) and again collaborated on a program assessment chapter for the Spring 2018 Handbook of College Reading and Study Strategy Research (3rd ed.).
Now retired from the University of Iowa, Jan continues to enjoy learning and serving. Currently, she is on the editorial board for the Journal of Developmental Education, reviews applications for NCLCA Leadership certification, serves as a learning assistance program evaluation consultant, and continues to be a presenter and mentor at professional conferences.
What is a live webinar?
A live webinar is an interactive online training. Participants can communicate with the presenter(s) during the event via a live chat feature.
What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can be accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You will receive the recording the week following the live event. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the purchase date.
How long are the webinars?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- You will receive the login information within 5 minutes of registering for the webinar.
- The presentation materials will be available before the live event. Please check the link in the login information email.
- On the day of the live event, participants can log in 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
What are the technical requirements?

Which workshops are your top rated?
We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.
Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. Is there an admin view?
This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.
