Participants will leave the webinar with the competencies needed to successfully develop, implement, and manage student apprentice and internship programs in a variety of higher education and organizational settings. The focus will be on hands-on applications and meeting real-world expectations of employers and students involved in these programs.
This webinar will address the challenges and opportunities that developing and managing apprenticeship and internship programs represent for both the student participating in these programs as well as the institutions and organizations that partner to make them a reality. Emphasis will be on both philosophy and logistics.
Apprenticeship and internship programs represent a unique and mutually-beneficial opportunity to empower students with the knowledge and skills they will need to successfully navigate the 21st Century world of work as well as their careers. Many academic programs at most colleges and universities offer apprenticeships and internship as a way to connect the classroom to the proverbial ‘real world.’ The benefits of these programs are well documented; they help students acquire a more realistic sense of the kinds of skills they will need to be successful in today’s fast-paced global economy. They also equip them with the appropriate attitudes and dispositions needed to be effective in business and industry today. Finally, they help to instill within them the increasing importance and relevance of networking to sustained career viability.
For the organizations that utilize apprentices and interns, the benefits can also be substantial. First, they get help in accomplishing their goals and objectives - and a fresh perspective at a time when both are in relatively short supply yet never more needed to insure economic success. Students bring a lot to the table, including the latest innovations and technological advancements. Moreover, they are often highly motivated – especially if their experience with a company or agency has the potential to evolve into a full-time position either at the organization where they are completing their apprenticeship or internship. Again, there is no substitute for on-the-job training and these experiences provide an opportunity for students to prove their worth to the organization before it has a more extensive investment in them. In this interactive webinar, we will explore the mechanics involved in developing and maintaining apprenticeship and internship programs, discuss the challenges involved and how to overcome them, and dissect the process for fostering stronger, more productive relationships with host organizations. Dr. Aaron W. Hughey is a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs at Western Kentucky University, where he oversees the graduate degree program in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Before joining the faculty in 1991, he spent 10 years in progressive administrative positions, including five years as the Associate Director of University Housing at WKU. He was also head of the department of Counseling and Student Affairs for five years before returning to the faculty full-time in 2008. Dr. Hughey has degrees from the University of Tennessee at Martin, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Western Kentucky University, and Northern Illinois University. He has authored (or co-authored) over 60 refereed publications on a wide range of issues including leadership and student development, standardized testing, diversity, legal issues (including compliance), technology, and educational administration. He regularly presents at national and international conferences and consults extensively with companies and schools. He also provides training and professional development programs on a variety of topics centered on student success; developing and implementing apprenticeship and internship program is one of his specialties.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- You will receive the login information within 5 minutes of registering for the webinar.
- The presentation materials will be available before the live event. Please check the link in the login information email.
- On the day of the live event, participants can log in 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.
Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. Is there an admin view?
This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.
