This webinar will help tutors develop the communication skill of active listening, which is necessary to ensure that their tutoring sessions are productive and interactive. However, active listening doesn’t always come naturally. This session will provide some strategies and approaches that tutors can utilize to communicate with their tutees effectively.
Webinar attendees will learn about utilizing key active listening strategies in peer tutoring sessions.
While research varies, some studies suggest that we remember only about fifty percent of what we hear. Consider this research finding. When we are in conversations with our friends, colleagues, and family members, we only pay attention to about half of what they say and vice versa. This research suggests that many of us do not know how to listen effectively. Indeed, our ability to listen effectively influences the quality of our relationships with others and how well we perform in the classroom and workplace. As a tutor, developing an effective relationship with your tutees is the first step to effective tutoring. Listening well is one of the most important skills tutors can develop. Listening well will also allow you to understand your tutees’ learning experiences and their challenges in the classroom. Developing these effective listening and communication skills necessitates a certain level of self-awareness. The good news is that you can become a highly skilled listener with some self-awareness and practice. What is a highly skilled listener, exactly?
A highly skilled listener is an “active listener.” Active listening is about building rapport, mutual understanding, and trust, all skills needed to be an effective tutor. In addition, active listening will enable you to understand what your tutees need to become better students and master their course material. Honing this skill will contribute to your productivity and success as a tutor.

Laurie L. Hazard is the Assistant Dean for Student Success at Bryant University in Smithfield, RI. As a member of the Applied Psychology Department, she writes about parent involvement, student personality types and classroom success. She is an award-winning expert on how students can make successful transitions from high school to college. After earning her Master’s of Education degree from Boston University in counseling, she received a Doctoral degree from Boston University in Curriculum and Teaching. Laurie is co-author of the book Foundations for Learning, 3rd Edition (2012, Prentice Hall), which is designed to help students make a successful transition to college by encouraging them to take responsibility for and claim their own education. Hazard’s textbook has been adopted by colleges and universities around the country, including Boston University, University of Nevada, and Texas A&M. Richard J. Light, the Walter H. Gale Professor of Education at Harvard University, calls Hazard’s book “a winner for any college student” that is a “beautifully written joy to read.”
Laurie has won numerous awards for her work with first-year students and their parents, including the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition’s Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate; the Learning Assistance Association of New England’s Outstanding Research and Publication Award; and the Learning Assistance Association of New England’s Outstanding Service to Developmental Students Award. Most recently, Laurie received the CRLA Northeast’s Outstanding Service to the Field of Developmental Education Award.
Laurie’s expertise has garnered national media attention. She has been interviewed and cited as an expert in the Associated Press, Seventeen Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, The Times-Picayune, The San Diego Tribune, and Student Affairs Leader. Laurie has also been a guest columnist for the Washington Post’s Answer Sheet: A School Survival Guide for Parents (And Everyone Else). Her articles offer concrete advice for parents of new college students: “How to Help Your Child Adapt to College Life,” and “Parents Should Leave their Kids Alone at College.” Most recently, Laurie has written a book with co-presenter Stephanie Carter, called Your Freshman Is Off To College (2016).

What is a live webinar?
A live webinar is an interactive online training. Participants can communicate with the presenter(s) during the event via a live chat feature.
What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can be accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You will receive the recording the week following the live event. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the purchase date.
How long are the webinars?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- You will receive the login information within 5 minutes of registering for the webinar.
- The presentation materials will be available before the live event. Please check the link in the login information email.
- On the day of the live event, participants can log in 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
What are the technical requirements?

Which workshops are your top rated?
We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.
Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. If you are interested in learning more about this option, give us a call.
Is there an admin view?
This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.
