Accelerating Into College-Level Coursework Through Co-Requisite Remediation: A Template For Success

O'Shea and Haberer are the recipients of the 2017 TRPP Associates, Innovation Award. TRPP Associates annually awards $1000 to a deserving individual or team of individuals who are engaged in the practice of developmental education/learning assistance and want to explore how to integrate theory, research, and principles into their practice.
Participant takeaways include an understanding of co-requisite remediation, how Lewis and Clark Community College implemented this project working with faculty and academic advisors, and success data, both course success rates and retention rates.
Many students start college underprepared. When these students are required to complete two or three semesters of developmental/remedial coursework before beginning the program, approximately 20% ever complete college with a degree or credential. Shortening the sequence of developmental education with a co-requisite support course can help improve this completion rate.
The presenters will share a template for implementing successful co-requisite remediation for learners with diverse skill levels and academic pathways based on the theoretical framework that students are academically capable of doing college-level coursework with the appropriate support. Engaging both faculty and academic advisors in a transparent process, Lewis and Clark have been able to scale up co-requisite remediation in four semesters. Success data from the first three semesters, both course success and retention, will be shared.

Jill O’Shea Lane is the Dean of Transfer Programs at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, Illinois. Prior to her appointment to this position, Jill was an Assistant Professor of Speech at Lewis & Clark. Jill came to Lewis & Clark from the Lone Star Community College System in Houston, Texas where she served as an Associate Professor of Communication. She also served as an adjunct faculty member at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois for many years. Jill has extensive experience in higher education and government. Jill served as the Director of Governmental Relations at the Illinois Community College Board where she lobbied the Illinois Legislature on behalf of the community college system in Illinois. She also spent several years at the University of Illinois – Springfield as Projects Manager of the Illinois Legislative Studies Center. Jill has served as staff to the Illinois Legislature as an Analyst at the Illinois Citizens Assembly and as staff in the Illinois Governor’s Office as a Budget Analyst for the Bureau of the Budget. Jill holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Drake University, a Master of Arts degree in communication from the University of Illinois – Springfield, and a Doctorate in Higher education Leadership from Maryville University of St. Louis. Jill and her family reside in Godfrey, Illinois.
Kathy Haberer is the Director of Student Development and Counseling at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, Illinois, where her responsibilities include planning programs and coursework for students with mild/moderate learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, low college placement test scores and other learning problems. She is a member of the College’s Student Success Team and has been instrumental in developing co-requisite remediation courses and providing training for other Illinois community college as they develop co-requisite remediation. From 2009 through 2013, she was the Director of the college’s Fund for Improvement in Secondary Education (FIPSE) grant to implement, test, and refine replicable instructional and student support strategies that improve student performance and success rates. From 2013 through 2017, she managed a grant from the Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities to provide authentic transition for high school seniors at the College. Kathy is a Past President, Treasurer and Secretary of MRADE (the Midwest Regional Association for Developmental Education), the NADE (National Association for Developmental Education) 2004 Conference Hospitality Chair, former Co-chair of the NADE Learning Disabilities Special Interest Group, founding Chair of the NADE Learning Communities Special Interest Group, and a Special Learning Needs Resource Specialist. Besides her MRADE and NADE memberships and activities, Kathy is a member of Illowa chapter of the Association for Disabilities in Higher Education and the Madison County Transition Planning Council. She has taught in a variety of settings including as a middle school teacher in regular and special education classrooms, a GED/Adult Education teacher, a college developmental reading and study skills instructor, adjunct instructor in Education and a teacher trainer. She has presented on developmental education and disability support topics at regional and national conferences, including AHEAD, MRADE, NADE, and Innovations. Kathy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in English and Sociology from Austin Peay State University and a Master of Education degree from George Mason University.

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You typically receive a link to the recording and handouts within 24 hours of registration. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
How long are the webinars?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
- We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
- We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
- On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.
Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (48 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. Is there an admin view?
