Seemingly overnight, COVID-19 dramatically altered the way colleges and universities operate. However, our role as academic advisors has been, as always, to assure students that graduation and a career still lie within their reach – and then follow through on our convictions to make that happen. To do this, it is imperative that we view the pandemic as the ultimate learning experience and integrate what works and doesn't work into our academic advising programs and services as we move forward.
This webinar will provide evidence-based best practices for academic advising from our collective experience with COVID-19 in higher education over the last two years. In addition, this interactive session will discuss how we can take what we have learned from our struggles with the pandemic to build a better advising model, i.e., one that will support the holistic needs of college students (and ourselves) as we move forward.

As COVID-19 forced colleges and universities to change the way they operate drastically, one of our primary concerns has been the ongoing effort to keep academic advising viable in a fluid environment. We've had to both navigate the immediate challenges and anticipate the systemic changes that will be needed moving forward. Join your colleagues from across the country as we explore the evidence-based best practices that have emerged – and continue to appear – regarding academic advising in the post-Covid 19 landscape. We'll explore successful programs and initiatives that have been employed to keep college students on track to graduation during these trying times; we'll also examine how academic advisors can be better prepared to deal with this kind of disruption should it occur again.
Moreover, we will look at the lessons COVID-19 has for academic advising in general and dissect concrete recommendations for strengthening the process as we transition into the "new normal." We can emerge from this dark chapter more robust and more resilient than ever – and with a renewed sense of the importance of our mission to the students, we serve. We can survive and thrive during these extraordinary times – and we can become stronger and more responsive to the needs of the students we serve. But we have to be purposeful in our actions and fully committed to working together. “Covid 19 precipitated immense challenges for academic advisors. Almost overnight, college and universities were forced to move most of their advising operations to remote formats. There were problems at all levels, from technological challenges to staffing shortages to the challenges of providing effective academic advising services in a constantly-evolving environment. But we persevered, and as we have continued to move forward, slowly but surely evidence-based practices have emerged with respect to how we can better support our academic advisors. The pandemic exposed flawed policies and biased assumptions, but it also provided us with a unique opportunity to adapt, overcome and enhance our effectiveness with the entire process.”
Dr. Aaron W. Hughey is a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs at Western Kentucky University, where he oversees the graduate degree program in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Before joining the faculty in 1991, he spent 10 years in progressive administrative positions, including five years as the Associate Director of University Housing at WKU. He was also head of the department of Counseling and Student Affairs for five years before returning to the faculty full-time in 2008. Dr. Hughey has degrees from the University of Tennessee at Martin, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Western Kentucky University, and Northern Illinois University. He has authored (or co-authored) over 65 refereed publications on a wide range of issues including leadership and student development, standardized testing, diversity, legal issues (including compliance), technology, and educational administration. He regularly presents at national and international conferences and consults extensively with companies and schools. He also provides training and professional development programs on a variety of topics centered on student success; how to respond to Covid 19 effectively and realistically is one of his specialties.

What is a live webinar?
A live webinar is an interactive online training. Participants can communicate with the presenter(s) during the event via a live chat feature.
What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can be accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You will receive the recording the week following the live event. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the purchase date.
How long are the webinars?
Webinars range from 60-90 minutes. Please check each training for the exact timeframe.
How do I register?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- You will receive the login information within 5 minutes of registering for the webinar.
- The presentation materials will be available before the live event. Please check the link in the login information email.
- On the day of the live event, participants can log in 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.

Which workshops are your top rated?
We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.
Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. If you are interested in learning more about this option, give us a call.
Is there an admin view?
This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.
