Waubonsee Community College faced significant challenges in supporting students on academic probation. Previously, their process relied on in-person workshops requiring students to attend mandatory sessions on campus. This approach created barriers, especially for students balancing work, family responsibilities, and other obligations. Additionally, with a short window between academic standing updates and registration, many students struggled to meet with advisors in time to register for courses, leading to delays in their academic progress.
Solutions
In response, Waubonsee transitioned to an online, structured support system using Innovative Educators' StudentLingo platform. The college revamped its Student on Academic Probation (SOAP) module, moving it from an in-person session to a digital format that provides students with on-demand access to essential academic success resources. The module includes self-paced videos, time management and study skills training, self-reflection exercises, and personalized action plans. To enhance engagement, Waubonsee integrates proactive outreach strategies, utilizing advisors, retention specialists, and peer mentors to follow up with students based on their responses in the module. This transition has reduced barriers to registration, improved early intervention efforts, and allowed the college to collect valuable student data to refine its support strategies. By leveraging technology, Waubonsee has created a more efficient, student-centered approach that fosters academic resilience and success.
