The University of Central Arkansas offers a variety of summer bridge programs that have the purpose of getting students acclimated to college life and to brush up on academic skills before starting the fall semester. This webinar will discuss one-week skill building and test prep programs as well as a three-week co-requisite program that clusters a general education course, a developmental literacy course, and a student success course. Cal Poly has implemented a three-week early Fall bridge program for incoming freshmen to help students prepare for the pace and intensity of the academic experience at a highly selective university. The webinar will emphasize the curriculum development, implementation, and outcomes of both programs.
Participants will also learn how to identify the high-level goals of their institution’s leadership and strategy, and how to design (or redesign) summer bridge programs to achieve outcomes that support and advance an institution’s strategic priorities.
Creating An Online Summer Bridge Program: Designing, Implementing & Assessing

Summer Bridge programs are considered a best practice in higher education and have been developed in many colleges and universities across the country. The goal of these courses and programs is to help a variety of student populations have a successful transition during the first-year. A perennial issue in designing summer bridge programs is determining the curriculum of content and facing the dilemma of “fitting it all in.” How do institutions determine what content is essential as students make the transition to college? How do campuses individualize the curricula and programs to meet the needs of each campus and their diverse student populations? How do we support faculty to develop expertise?
Utilizing e-learning pedagogy offers practical solutions to patterned issues that summer bridge programs typically face. This session examines the development of an online course designed to enhance the transition into higher education and enables participants to consider a framework for their course design. Practical strategies for incorporating online resources into an e-learning student success course will be highlighted.
This session explores the process of developing and creating an online summer bridge course to assist students with the transition into the higher education experience. Participants will discover the challenges and rewards of designing a dynamic online course from the initial idea phase through the implementation and assessment stages.

Amy Baldwin, Ed.D., is an educator and educational entrepreneur. She wrote the first, ground-breaking student success textbook for community colleges and the first student success textbook for first-generation students. In response to nationwide demand, in 2011 she founded Educational Frontiers Group (EFG), which provides educational services, such as consulting, professional development, and educational novelties. After 18 years as an award winning community college professor, she now serves as Director of University College at the University of Central Arkansas. She is committed to helping students get in, get through, get out, and get paid.

Brian Tietje, Ph.D., is a thought leader in higher education and a passionate advocate for student success, particularly for those who face challenging circumstances and who may not be familiar with the unwritten rules of college and career success. He is a co-author along with Amy of The College Experience (Pearson Education) franchise. He currently fulfills the role of Vice Provost of International, Graduate and Extended Education at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, California. In his role, he designs and implements new programs to support student success, include Cal Poly’s summer bridge program called “Quarter Plus”.
Julia Winden-Fey, Ph.D., is an educator and a long-time student success program developer. She has designed and worked with numerous student success programs on her campus in both administrative and faculty roles, and recognizes that because student needs vary, and student cohorts change, no program is ever “done.” For the past four years, she has co-coordinated the annual Arkansas Student Success Symposium with Amy, an event which each year brings over two hundred Arkansas higher education professionals together with nationally-recognized leaders in student success for a day-long symposium on best practices and emerging trends. She currently serves as the Director of the Office of Student Success at the University of Central Arkansas, and oversees the university’s Summer Start bridge programs.

At Bryant University, Laurie L. Hazard, Ed.D. is responsible for the administration and development of programs and curricula aimed at student success and retention. She is the Assistant Dean for Student Success the curriculum coordinator for Bryant's First-Year Gateway Experience. She coordinates the activities of the Center for Teaching and Learning and she teaches in the Applied Psychology Department. Laurie is an award-winning educator who was selected by the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition as a top ten Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate. She also received the Learning Assistance Association of New England’s Outstanding Research and Publication Award in 2006 and the Learning Assistance Association of New England: Outstanding Service to Developmental Students Award in October of 2010. Most recently, Laurie received the CRLA Northeast, Outstanding Service to the Field of Developmental Education Award in March 2013.
Laurie has been designing curricula for FYE and study skills courses for more than twenty-five years. She served on the New England Peer Tutor Association Board from 1997-2007 and has been a Guest Editorial Board member for the Learning Assistance Review. Her research focuses on the personality traits and habits of students that influence academic achievement. She has done extensive work assessing the effectiveness of learning assistance programs and FYE courses. Publications by Laurie and her co-author include: Exploring the Evidence, Volume III: Reporting Outcomes of First-Year Seminars, a monograph published by the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition and “What Does It Mean to be ‘College-Ready’?”, an article which appears in Connection: The Journal of the New England Board of Higher Education. The third edition of her student success text Foundations for Learning: Claiming Your Education was published in 2012.
Laurie has collaborated with Innovative Educators in Colorado to design, develop, and deliver webinars and interactive videos designed to enhance success and retention initiatives on college campuses nationwide. Her work in student success has also received national media attention. Her interviews include: “Prepare college-bound kids for hard work ahead, which appeared in the Chicago Tribune in 2007 and “Study Tips for College Students” in Seventeen Magazine in 2008. In March of 2010, Laurie was interviewed by Associated Press columnist, Beth Harpaz, for her article “Colleges Don’t Like Senior Slump in High School.” Laurie has been a Guest Columnist for the Washington Post Answer Sheet (2011, August 22): Why parents should leave their kids alone at college and How to help your child adapt to college life 2010, September 2). Laurie was also interviewed by the New Jersey Star Ledger: The Other Freshman 15: pitfalls for first-year collegians (2013, July 30). Finally, her most recent paper was published in the Proceedings of the 10th Annual National Symposium on Student Retention (November 2014).
Stephen Payne is the E-learning Specialist at Bryant University, working in the Office of Faculty Development and Innovation. Stephen earned his B.A. in Business Administration in 1998 and a Certificate in Information Systems in 1999 from the University of New Brunswick located in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. In addition to his education in Canada, Stephen recently completed a graduate certificate in Instructional Technology and Design from UMASS Boston in 2015. Stephen has been involved in the online delivery of several of the Graduate School programs since joining Bryant in 2008. Recently, he has been focused on educational technologies for the classroom, especially in video and lecture capture. He is the co-creator of an online student success course, developed for incoming first-years which includes incorporating various online learning objects with a focus on instructional design. In 2015 at the Campus Tech Conference in Boston, Massachusetts, Stephen co-presented e-Success: Promoting First Year Engagement Through the Use of an Online Course. Most recently, Stephen has been collaborating with faculty, various departments, and organizations at Bryant to design, develop and deliver robust E-learning material. Stephen also serves as the main support contact for Bryant's LMS (Blackboard) system.
Laura Kohl is the Associate Director at the Douglas & Judith Krupp Library at Bryant University and leads the information literacy instruction group on campus. Laura holds an undergraduate degree in Anthropology from Boston University and an MLIS from the University of Rhode Island. Most recently, Laura completed a graduate certificate in Instructional Technology and Design from UMASS Boston. Laura serves as the main point of support for the campus ePortfolio program and collaborates with faculty to incorporate multimedia assignments into their curriculum. Over the past two years, she has helped to create and implement an online course for incoming first-years at her institution which includes incorporating various online learning objects with a focus on instructional design. Laura has a wide breadth of teaching and presentation background including delivering workshops at Internet Librarian, the Association of College and Research Libraries, First-Year Experience and Students in Transition, and the Association for Authentic, Experiential and Evidence-Based Learning Annual Conferences.
What is a live webinar?
A live webinar is an interactive online training. Participants can communicate with the presenter(s) during the event via a live chat feature.
What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You typically receive a link to the recording and handouts within 24 hours of registration. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
How long are the webinars?
Webinars can be 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Please check each training for the exact timeframe.

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- We email participants login instructions approximately 1 week prior to the live event.
- We email participants a link to the PowerPoint (.pdf) and any additional handouts approximately 1-2 days prior to the live event. Participants can make copies for attendees if desired.
- We give a courtesy reminder call the day before the live event.
- On the day of the live event, participants can login 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
What are the technical requirements?

What equipment is required?
For individual or small group viewing, a computer with a reliable Internet connection and audio capabilities are all that’s needed. For large group presentations, we recommend a computer with a reliable Internet connection and speakers, as well as an LCD projector. Participants can call in via phone if they are having trouble retrieving the audio over the computer. Please be sure to reserve a meeting room prior to the live event that can accommodate these requirements as well as your attendees. You should reserve the room 30 minutes prior to the webinar start time and you may want to allow at least 15-30 minutes after the webinar for discussion.

Which workshops are your top rated?
We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.
Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (48 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. Is there an admin view?
