Helping teachers, educators, student discipline and conduct, counseling staff, law enforcement, and BIT/CARE teams better understand how the incel philosophy is adopted, how it escalates to violence, and stop this progression. The webinar will review core risk factors for incel beliefs, discuss threat assessment and treatment options for those who follow this nihilist and destructive way of thinking. While many have heard the term “incel,” there is an increased need to explain the nature of this spectrum behavior and address the risk of violence to the larger community.
Participants will better understand the rising trend in men who describe themselves as an involuntary celibate and what elements contribute to this philosophy. In recent months, there have been several mass shootings involving individuals who identify as incels. The speakers will address preventative steps to identify, assess and treat those who subscribe to these beliefs.
This webinar addresses the challenge of assessing and responding to the growing involuntary celibate (incel) trend in recent decades. Beyond the misogynistic tone of their ideas, a central concern lies in the movement toward targeted violence. Incels who fully swallow the black pill (a term used to describe the futility of fighting against pre-determined genetics make them inferior and unable to compete with other men) become increasingly depressed, isolated and angry. These hardened perspectives and perceived/actual slights lead to the collection of injustices and grievances that, in turn, lead to violence towards a society that has failed them and women that will remain out of arm’s reach.
Dr. Chris Taylor and Dr. Van Brunt, prior president of NABITA, author of over a dozen books on topics of BIT, CARE, and threat assessment, and creator of several threat assessment measures, will discuss these concepts and offer clear and actionable examples of how to address the growing incel philosophy from a BIT/CARE and counseling perspective. Drawing from research and examples from his recent book Understanding and Treating Incels he will review the core tenets of the incel philosophy and what the best approaches are to address these behaviors in educational settings. The online training will include a supplemental packet of research-based risk factors, sample procedures, and assessment guidance. In addition, discussion questions and several case studies will be included to help participants better understand and apply the concepts discussed.
