Challenge - Implementing Universal Design for learning

Many campus leaders mistake UDL for a subset of legal accessibility requirements that serve only learners with disabilities. This webinar provides participants with language, models, and practices to situate UDL within efforts that campus leaders already support: diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), as well as bottom-line budget arguments. In order to advocate effectively for adopting UDL practices across campus, we need to be able to change the mindset among our senior-leader colleagues, so that UDL is perceived as a mission-critical set of practices for the entire campus. Go from “it’s the right thing to do, but we don’t have time/funds/people” to “we must do this.”

Key Takeaway

Merely being able to take part in interactions is a “step zero” toward equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice (EDIJ) efforts across programs and curriculum. Universal design for learning (UDL) helps us to provide such access across a broad variety of stakeholders.

Overview

Conversations in higher education about access, equity, and diversity are predicated on people being able to engage with ideas, content, peers, experts, and their local and state-wide communities. This interactive webinar will introduce you to Universal Design for Learning (UDL). You will discover how to implement UDL in the design of your online and tech-mediated course and service interactions, creating spaces for inclusive teaching and support practices to take place—in the classroom and beyond.

You’ll also find out where to look for help at your institution and in your learning management system (LMS): recent research from CAST and the Center for Universal Design in Education suggests that institutions whose faculty-support staff members use UDL, too, see better adoption rates and deeper penetration of UDL principles across all courses. This webinar uses active-learning techniques and provides use-them-now resources for participants. Especially by relating UDL to broader access benefits for all learners, this webinar’s activities serve as a model for participants to re-frame accessibility and inclusion conversations.

This webinar posits diversity in its most inclusive form: instead of relying solely on providing accommodation services to learners with disabilities—which is most often a last-minute, ad-hoc, reactive process—adopting UDL as part of an institution’s culture of course design, teaching practices, and support services allows all learners to benefit, regardless of their place on the ability spectrum.

This webinar assumes variety among participants and will feature multiple means of engagement throughout. The structure of the conversation follows the “10 and 2” best practice of chunking information into discrete blocks, interspersed with opportunities for participant reflection, reaction, and practice. Content and materials will be provided in multiple formats, and the presenter will practice verbal descriptions of visually-shared information throughout. Participants will always have at least +1 options for action and expression: e.g., working solo versus collaborating, using text chat features for reflection or using verbal feedback in order to communicate.

Objectives

  • Learn how to incorporate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) elements into your courses
  • Design/retrofit existing course components using UDL principles
  • Expand your institution’s use of UDL through five targeted, use-them-tomorrow techniques;
  • Outline four initiatives that campus leaders always fund, regardless of budget or staffing concerns; and
  • Craft a message to senior campus leaders about UDL that mirrors language used in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statements.
  • Faculty members who teach online
  • Faculty members who teach face-to-face
  • Instructional designers
  • Teaching/learning center staff
  • Institutional administrators who teach, design, or support higher-education courses
  • Any educator interested in learning more about universal design for learning

Which workshops are your top rated?

We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.

Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?

You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. If you are interested in learning more about this option, give us a call.

Is there an admin view?

This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.

How have other schools leveraged reporting?
  • One of our partners, College of Southern Nevada, used StudentLingo to measure learning outcomes. in a study, one class had access to StudentLingo and the other cohort did not. 92% of the cohort with access to StudentLingo earned a whole letter grade higher than the cohort without StudentLingo.
  • A lot of our partners use the data to justify funding for grants, operating dollars, or for new program development.
  • The evaluation data is particularly useful in identifying what type of learning students prefer and the qualitative takeaways from viewing the workshop.
  • Some of our partners use the data to connect with their student information system, like Banner or Peoplesoft.
  • I think a great way to get started on how you want to use the data is to ask yourself some questions:
    1. How will I know if StudentLingo was successful?
    2. What do I hope students will gain from access to StudentLingo?
    3. What data is important for me to know in order to show that StudentLingo is a worthwhile purchase?
What is TutorLingo?

TutorLingo is a flexible tutor training plaform and can be purchased at the Bronze, Silver or Gold level to meet your training needs.  Every level consists of a series of 9 Core online training modules that prepare tutors by providing the basic skills necessary to support their peers in becoming more independent and strategic learners. The Silver & Gold purchasing options include TLNow training and our Additional Level 1 or Level 2 training topics, all of which help to achieve Level 1 & 2 of the CRLA Certification.  See our pricing guide for details.

Should the TutorLingo trainings be viewed in any particular order?

No, each training is a stand-alone workshop, and they can be viewed in any order.

Do you offer micro-credentialing for Tutoring Center staff?

Yes, we offer multiple micro-credentials which would serve Tutoring Center teams including Tutoring Center Administration, Mastering Service Excellence, Fostering A Culturally Responsive Campus Through Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Supervisory Leadership: Maximizing Productivity & Staff Development.

Yes. CRLA members receive a 10% discount on TutorLingo.
