Challenge
While lecturing is a mainstay of the face-to-face classroom, faculty often fail to realize that the same lecture--useful in the face-to-face classroom will probably not be watched by students online. Simply put, the online classroom is different. In the face-to-face classroom, social conventions and physical proximity enhance students' attention. The face-to-face classroom is a time-managed environment in which students are conditioned to provide time-limited engagement to classroom activities. In contrast, the online classroom is a click-and-go online environment that is outcome-managed. Rather than directing their attention as a function of time, students are guided by outcomes…, and they will seek the resources or materials that allow them to achieve the learning objectives in the most efficient way possible. If students are not actively engaged by a video (or do not believe that a video adds value to the learning experience), they will not watch it. This does not imply that they are not willing to engage with learning material. Instead, there is a plethora of other videos and instructional resources just a click away. With this in mind, if faculty are going to create asynchronous lectures, they must ensure the lectures are designed and delivered in a manner amenable to the way students learn online.

Key Takeaway
Online, asynchronous lectures are necessarily different from their face-to-face counterparts; thus, faculty cannot merely record and post the same lecture they would have done face-to-face and hope to achieve similar learning outcomes. In this webinar, you will learn how to design and deliver engaging asynchronous lectures uniquely suited to the online classroom.

Overview
Traditionally, the asynchronous online classroom has been a text-heavy learning environment. While the text may be an effective means of teaching content, it can be more challenging to connect with students and humanize the online classroom using only text-based communication. Asynchronous video lectures allow faculty to bridge this gap by teaching the content in a more personalized and engaging manner while efficiently delivering necessary content. But for an asynchronous lecture to be effective, students must watch it. Herein lies the challenge. Unlike the face-to-face classroom where students are a captive audience for the duration of a class period, online students learn in a click-and-go environment. Their attention is directed by learning outcomes rather than a designed time-period. In this context, if students don't find a lecture video interesting, informative, or valuable, they will not watch it (and will seek out alternative resources to gain the necessary information). Thus, if faculty are going to invest their time and energy to create video lectures, they must tailor it to the online classroom's specific context. In this webinar, faculty will learn to create engaging asynchronous video lectures to engage online students.

Objectives

  • Utilize asynchronous lectures to increase student learning and engagement
  • Structure a video lecture that is uniquely suited to the online classroom
  • Deliver a recorded lecture in a manner that is engaging to remote viewers
  • Implement Web 2.0 technologies to deliver a video lecture
  • Utilize video lectures to personalize asynchronous online learning
    • Faculty (full-time, adjunct, campus & online)
    • Online Learning Administrators & Developers
    • Curriculum Development
    • Faculty Development & Training
    • Any educator interested in learning more about creating engaging video lectures
Watching a lecture online is not the same as attending the same lecture in person. As such, it is essential that faculty consider the unique context of online learning in the creation and delivery of asynchronous lectures. Simply put, there is no value in creating an online lecture that students will not watch.

Which workshops are your top rated?

We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.

Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?

You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. If you are interested in learning more about this option, give us a call.

    Is there an admin view?

This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.

How have other schools leveraged reporting?
    • One of our partners, College of Southern Nevada, used StudentLingo to measure learning outcomes. in a study, one class had access to StudentLingo and the other cohort did not. 92% of the cohort with access to StudentLingo earned a whole letter grade higher than the cohort without StudentLingo.
    • A lot of our partners use the data to justify funding for grants, operating dollars, or for new program development.
    • The evaluation data is particularly useful in identifying what type of learning students prefer and the qualitative takeaways from viewing the workshop.
    • Some of our partners use the data to connect with their student information system, like Banner or Peoplesoft.
    • I think a great way to get started on how you want to use the data is to ask yourself some questions:
      1. How will I know if StudentLingo was successful?
      2. What do I hope students will gain from access to StudentLingo?
      3. What data is important for me to know in order to show that StudentLingo is a worthwhile purchase?
    What is TutorLingo?

TutorLingo is a flexible tutor training plaform and can be purchased at the Bronze, Silver or Gold level to meet your training needs.  Every level consists of a series of 9 Core online training modules that prepare tutors by providing the basic skills necessary to support their peers in becoming more independent and strategic learners.
