Diversity matters in higher education. The entire campus community benefits when faculty and staff of color are recruited and retained. The students – especially the students of color - who attend the institution benefit by their presence, as does the entire academic community. However, many faculty and staff of color do not seem to be able to reach their full potential at many colleges and universities. This is a huge problem that will only get worse in the coming decades if not addressed purposefully and conscientiously. As our society continues to become more diverse, it is imperative that faculty and staff reflect this reality.

Overview

Many institutions have made significant progress in their efforts to attract faculty and staff of color in their various academic, administrative, and student services departments. However, when it comes to retaining these talented and enthusiastic professionals, the record is somewhat less stellar. The truth is that many faculty and staff of color after they land a job in higher education, are not successful – or as successful as they could be – at turning the position into a career. For many faculty of color, in particular, this often translates into a failure to navigate the tenure and promotion process. The reality is faculty and staff of color face immense challenges in the academic world – challenges that many of their colleagues and academic supervisors do not really understand and, as such are ill-prepared to address.

This webinar will provide evidence-based best practices that can be used to help faculty and staff of color successfully adjust to their new positions in the academy and stay on a productive path toward a long and distinguished career. A huge part of this process involves mentoring and coaching these individuals in not only their respective disciplines or areas of expertise but also educating them as to the social mores and political minefields than can characterize higher education. Concrete strategies for retaining and supporting faculty and staff of color will be presented, together with case studies showing some of the pitfalls that can characterize the process.

Dr. Aaron Hughey webinar speaker.

Dr. Aaron W. Hughey is a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs at Western Kentucky University, where he oversees the graduate degree program in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Before joining the faculty in 1991, he spent 10 years in progressive administrative positions, including five years as the Associate Director of University Housing at WKU. He was also head of the department of Counseling and Student Affairs for five years before returning to the faculty full-time in 2008. Dr. Hughey has degrees from the University of Tennessee at Martin, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Western Kentucky University, and Northern Illinois University. He has authored (or co-authored) over 60 refereed publications on a wide range of issues including leadership and student development, standardized testing, diversity, legal issues (including compliance), technology, and educational administration. He regularly presents at national and international conferences and consults extensively with companies and schools. He also provides training and professional development programs on a variety of topics centered on faculty, staff and student success.

As the Dean of Students (D0S) and Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Student Life at Western Kentucky University, Dr. Martha Sales is both diligent and committed to the success of students. With her 20 years of grant writing experience, she has been awarded 19 million for the success of students. Aside from her administrative roles, Martha also teaches and facilitates courses and trains students and her colleagues in her various areas of expertise. She serves and has served in many capacities throughout the campus, community, and nationwide sharing her knowledge in the success of students. As an educator and administrator, Martha is honored to have received numerous awards and recognitions throughout her 27-year career.

Dr. Martha Sales a native of Franklin, Kentucky to the late Mr. and Mrs. Hezekiah (Georgia) Robey. She overcame the barrier of being a low-income and first-generation student herself, in which has become her career-long passion. Martha obtained a Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership, an Educational Specialist in Student Affairs, a Masters of Arts in Counseling, Marriage and Family, a Bachelor’s of Science in Social Work with a Minor in African American Studies, and a Women’s Studies graduate certificate all from Western Kentucky University.

Martha not only serves as the DOS/AVP but sets priorities and creates the balance of home life and work, she is married to Pastor Shawn Sales and they have two children Seth and Kiah, they reside in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Martha is a member of the Loving Springs Baptist Church where she serves as one of the musicians, youth advisor, Sunday school teacher, and last but not least “the pastor’s wife.” She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated.

Martha has the unique ability to inspire and provide insight to others, while maintaining a high level of integrity and promoting congruency among all. Her life experiences have given her deep appreciation in the value of family and blessing others but opportunity of being used by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

  • The presentation materials will be available before the live event. Please check the link in the login information email.

College personnel then simply create a user login to access their personal dashboard. How do staff members access the on-demand training videos?

Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?
