Challenge
This webinar will emphasize the benefits of introducing Occupational Therapy (OT) professionals and OT theoretical framework into the academic setting. There is a growing movement both across the country and around the world that is recognizing the value and benefit of bringing OTs into the academic realm of higher education. The global pandemic caused by COVID-19 pandemic is emphasizing the pressure put on colleges and universities to provide holistic support to students that are being asked to participate in their classes in a new medium while also ensuring that they are maintaining their health and wellness and accessing other basic needs such as food, housing, jobs etc; the academic training and, many of which our colleges and universities were providing to students before the arrival of COVID-19. We will discuss the ever-present problem of expanding services with limited budgets and resources.

Key Takeaway
Participants will garner a thorough understanding of all the capabilities and benefits of introducing occupational therapy theoretical framework (and the OTs themselves) into an academic setting. Introduction to OT based academic interventions as well as tips and strategies for incorporating Occupational Therapy trainees into your center will be provided.

Overview
Today's students are facing unique challenges that no other generation before them has seen. From the global pandemic, soaring costs of higher education, online and hybrid classrooms, these digital natives feel the stress and pressure of what it means to be a college student in 2020. As a result, it has become essential that colleges and universities adapt to students' needs in historically unfathomable ways. Additionally, institution-wide budget constrictions are requiring that departments extend their services with less financial resources. If ever there was a time to change how we provide academic support to our college and university students, that time is now. The Kortschak Center for Learning and Creativity has successfully implemented Occupational Therapists (OTs), OT trainees, and OT interventions to students at the University of Southern California for the past four years with incredible success.

The addition of OTs provides the opportunity for academic success center (advising, tutoring, etc.) to provide holistic student support in a single instance. It offers meaningful interventions that support and enhance the student experience. College and university students are often balancing multiple stressors simultaneously. We are all aware of the negative impact too much stress can have on academic performance and personal health. Occupational therapists promote academic success, holistic health, and wellness, successful transition, maximized independence, and successful participation in meaningful activities, roles, and routines as a college student.

OTs can work with the general student population; they are trained to specialize in working with individuals diagnosed with a mental illness, neurodevelopmental disorder, physical disability, visual or hearing impairment, or co-morbid condition. OTs evaluate, create student treatment plans, and measure progress using a holistic lens, which considers the interplay between personal factors, environmental conditions, and a thorough analysis of activity components. OTs are adaptable and able to fit into a variety of service models (working with disability services, learning centers, health and wellness services, or as independent entities). Within multidisciplinary teams, OTs are known as being the "glue" between disciplines, contributing creative problem-solving solutions, using a practical "hands-on approach" and addressing holistic and client-centered components of student cases that may otherwise be overlooked.

Which workshops are your top rated?

We take quality seriously, and so all of our workshops are top notch in terms of content and look. However, if we know how you plan to use StudentLingo (FYE, Retention, Probation, TRIO, etc.), we can make workshop recommendations.

Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?

You can buy the entire StudentLingo package (50 workshops) or we offer several a la carte options. Unlike a lot of other software companies, we don’t charge per user, so we can work with any budget. We recommend talking to other departments on campus to increase your purchasing power and to share the cost. Also, we do have a pay model whereby students pay directly. If you are interested in learning more about this option, give us a call.

    Is there an admin view?

This is a feature of our platform, but comes at an additional cost. With the admin view, you get access to more advanced reporting, and you have it in real time. With the standard membership, you get monthly reports.

How have other schools leveraged reporting?
    • One of our partners, College of Southern Nevada, used StudentLingo to measure learning outcomes. in a study, one class had access to StudentLingo and the other cohort did not. 92% of the cohort with access to StudentLingo earned a whole letter grade higher than the cohort without StudentLingo.
    • A lot of our partners use the data to justify funding for grants, operating dollars, or for new program development.
    • The evaluation data is particularly useful in identifying what type of learning students prefer and the qualitative takeaways from viewing the workshop.
    • Some of our partners use the data to connect with their student information system, like Banner or Peoplesoft.
    • I think a great way to get started on how you want to use the data is to ask yourself some questions:
      1. How will I know if StudentLingo was successful?
      2. What do I hope students will gain from access to StudentLingo?
      3. What data is important for me to know in order to show that StudentLingo is a worthwhile purchase?
    What is TutorLingo?

TutorLingo is a series of 9 online training modules that prepare tutors by providing the basic skills necessary to support their peers in becoming more independent and strategic learners.

Should the TutorLingo trainings be viewed in any particular order?

No, each training is a stand-alone workshop, and they can be viewed in any order.

    What is the CRLA?

The CRLA is a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, tutoring, and mentoring.
