The presenters will provide an overview of FERPA as it relates to Behavioral Intervention Teams and Case Managers to help administrators better communicate with faculty, staff, and parents about students of concern.
Knowing how and when to communicate with faculty, staff, and parents can be a daunting challenge. This webinar will detangle FERPA and how it applies to the behavioral intervention team and case management settings.
We’ve all known the over-involved parent as well as the parent that is less helpful than we would have liked. Given the range of responses from parents, as well as from faculty and staff, when there is a student in distress or posing a threat--BITs and case managers are often left wondering when and how they should notify or communicate with others. To guide how and when administrators can communicate with others about a student of concern, the presenters will provide an overview of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Additionally, the presenters will explore strategies for leveraging communication with faculty, staff, and parents, within the bounds of FERPA, to better serve the students and the greater community.

Makenzie Schiemann is an Associate Consultant for TNG and the Associate Executive Director for the National Behavioral Intervention Team Association (NaBITA). She earned her B.S in Education from Ashland University, her M.S in Educational Psychology, Community Counseling from Southern Illinois University, and is currently a doctoral candidate in the University of South Florida Ph.D. program for Higher Education Administration.
Makenzie has delivered non-clinical case management services at both a large public university and a small private college. At both of these institutions, she also chaired the behavioral intervention team (BIT) and aligned the BIT and case management program with national standards of practice, ensuring students received quality support to enhance their overall personal and academic success. Makenzie has previously served on the leadership team for the Higher Education Case Managers Association and currently serves as a member of the NaBITA Advisory Board, and is an editor for the Journal of Campus Behavioral Intervention.
Tammy Briant, an active member of the Tampa Bay legal community, is currently the Executive Director of Community Tampa Bay. Ms. Briant also has adjunct positions at Stetson College of Law and in the University of South Florida's College of Education. She previously served as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at Stetson Law where she provided leadership and vision to a team of student affairs, residential life, and mental health professionals. She was also Deputy Title IX coordinator and Chair of Stetson Law's Behavioral Intervention Team (Student Support and Emergency Team). Formerly, an Assistant State Attorney in the Child Welfare Division of the 6th Judicial Circuit’s State Attorney’s Office, Ms. Briant is a member of both the Florida Bar and American Bar Association, as well as a past member of the Board of Directors for the Hillsborough County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. She is also a graduate of Leadership Tampa's 2014 Class.
What is a live webinar?

What is an on-demand webinar and how do I get access?
An on-demand training is a previously recorded webinar available online which can be accessed anytime, anywhere. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time. You will receive the recording the week following the live event. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the purchase date.
How long are the webinars?

When do I register?
You can register at any time, even the morning of the live event. If the live event has occurred, you can purchase the on-demand training (recording) of the session. You can register for on-demand trainings at any time.
What is the process for attending a live event?
The process is as follows:
- You will receive the login information within 5 minutes of registering for the webinar.
- The presentation materials will be available before the live event. Please check the link in the login information email.
- On the day of the live event, participants can log in 30 minutes prior to the start time. Once logged in, participants can see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions, and make comments via the chat feature.
- We email participants a link to the recording the Monday following the live event.
Is there a recording available? And how long is the recording good for?
Approximately one week after the conclusion of the live webinar, participants will receive a link to the recording which can be forwarded to all faculty and staff for viewing anytime, anywhere. The recording is a campus access license and is available for one year from the date of the live event.
What are the technical requirements?

Funding is a little tight, how many workshops can I get for $XX?

Is there an admin view?
