Overview

University undergraduate students often communicate daily with their family members.  Technology makes it easier than ever to call, text, email, Skype, Facebook, or tweet with regularity.  Families come to the university setting with an expectation for frequent communication that is easy to access and understand.  Keeping families “in the loop” with appropriate information can be a challenge.  Prudent planning, collaboration, and constant assessment will give your office the value added necessary to provide a comprehensive network of support for students’ development, persistence, and ultimate success from matriculation to commencement.

Who is the speaker?


Ms. Kristine Stewart, Assistant to the Vice President for Parent Programs at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, is in her 14th year with Miami’s parent programs.  At Miami University, founded in 1809, and celebrating its bicentennial year, mom’s and dad’s clubs and associations have been a part of Miami life since very early in the twentieth century.  Currently serving 15,000 undergraduate students, Miami is an Ohio public residential university with an impressive history of parent and family relationships.  Miami’s Parents Council has grown from 12 families when Kris began to 40 families, representing today approximately 10 families for each class year.  Kris’ office administers the Parents Fund, offering grants to students, faculty, and staff for student initiatives and travel and providing support to the Parents Council’s activities and programs.  Kris is a founding Board Member of the Association for Higher Education Parent & Family Program Professionals (AHEPPP).  Together with her colleague, Marjorie Savage, University of Minnesota, she will be working (2009–10) with a committee to write the Council for the Advancement for Higher Education (CAS) Standards for Parent & Family Programs.
