"Veterans and military members report that the most significant thing they want to occur while they serve their country is for the community to provide strong and continuing support for their families and significant others."

                                      ~ Donald Pfeffer, Director

Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, Higher Education Veterans Programs

                               Webinar Presenter

Overview

A major focus has been directed toward serving veterans on campus. While those services are essential, campuses are often failing to provide needed services for those significant others who are attending college and impacted by military service.

In the past, some family members have been able to utilize state and federal education benefits as the result of a military member's service. Since August 1, 2009, an increasing number are now on campus using the benefits for family members from the Post 911 GI Bill, Chapter 33. In addition, an increasing number of significant others are also planning to, or are, attending college.

This presentation will demonstrate how campuses can organize to provide quality services for military families and their significant others.  Participants will learn which specific services and activities are best suited to serve these individuals.  The presenter will also identify the biggest obstacles to implementing services and programs for family members and significant others and how campuses might overcome these obstacles.

Objectives

  • To identify the unique challenges faced by military members and their significant others while preparing to attend and while attending college.
  • To assist campuses to understand why it is necessary to serve family members and significant others in addition to veterans and military members on campus.
  • To identify some process for identifying the members family members and significant others prior to and while attending college.
  • To identify how campuses can organize to provide quality services for families and their significant others.
  • To identify specific services/activities to be used to serve these individuals.
  • To identify the biggest obstacles to implementing services and programs for family members and significant others and how campuses might overcome these obstacles
