Overview

In an age of increasing demands for accountability in higher education, many assistance programs are coming under increasing scrutiny.  We need to be as professional as possible in our assessment and evaluation processes, and as much as possible, we need to do our own work.  Learning some basic assessment and evaluation strategies can positively impact the quality of our individual services and the capacity of our profession to establish its importance in higher education.

This webinar will begin by reviewing characteristics of tutorial programs in higher education and ways in which programs collect data for evaluation.  We will then review several processes for assessment and evaluation:

  • Qualitative methods such as surveys, interviews, focus groups, and case studies,
  • Quantitative methods, from basic statistics for usage to more sophisticated ways of viewing program effectiveness, and
  • The use of national standards and research for comparative assessment.

We will also briefly cover information about using consultants for evaluation.

Objectives

Participants will learn:
  • What kinds of data are most important and useful for evaluation
  • How program characteristics impact evaluation processes
  • Key elements of qualitative methods and rigor
  • How to establish control or comparison groups for quantitative evaluation
  • The power of multiple measures
  • How to set and use standards for assessment and evaluation
  • Where and how to find evaluation assistance on a campus
  • Helpful resources, including software, websites, texts, and examples
  • The importance of continued research and evaluation for the profession
Who should attend?

This webinar would be most useful to someone who directly supervises a tutoring program in higher education or someone who has been charged to assess/evaluate such a program.  Learning center directors and employees, tutoring and Supplemental Instruction coordinators, TRIO directors, and non-college individuals with tutoring businesses will also find plenty of useful information about program evaluation.  Anyone interested in evaluating the quality of programs that support student learning will also benefit.

Who is the speaker?

Jan Norton has a Master’s in Educational Research & Psychology along with 27 years of experience in learning assistance programs, including her current position as the Director of the Center for Academic Resources at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.  She has worked as a consultant for learning assistance programs and serves as a program evaluator for the National Association for Developmental Education and the College Reading & Learning Association.  For CRLA, she also serves as the leader of the Research & Evaluation Special Interest Group.  Norton has been a frequent presenter at conferences and an occasional author, usually on topics related to assessment, evaluation, and research.
