“These veterans are the next generation of leaders. They have volunteered to serve and they represent everything that makes America great. We owe it to this country to see that they have all of the opportunities for success.”
Dr. John Schupp, Founder of SERV Program

Overview
Veterans face numerous challenges as they transition from their military service to civilian life. Offering and helping these students access educational benefits can help with this transition. At many colleges and universities across this country, veterans are often an underserved population within the student body. Institutions of higher learning need to establish veteran support programs that meet the unique needs of these students.

Who is the speaker?
Dr. John Schupp founded the SERV Program, a two-semester program at Cleveland State University designed just for veterans. These two semesters are just what the veterans needed to increase the freshmen retention and graduation rates. Under his direction, the program helps veterans apply for GI bill benefits, and offers veterans-only classes that help ease the transition back into the classroom for many veterans who have not been in a classroom for years. He works with veterans to navigate VA issues and offers a veteran-to-veteran mentoring program.
John received official university backing for the SERV (Supportive Education for the Returning Veteran) Programin 2007. The State of Ohio put in $100,000 in funding to get them started. SERV welcomed its first veterans to the CSU campus in the fall semester of 2007. Shortly after starting, SERV received the Wal-Mart award of $100.000. They began coordinating with AMVETSnational headquarters in November 2007 on a piece of legislation extending financial aid and other programs for veterans to be included in the Higher Education Act Reauthorization The SERV Act of 2008 was introduced in the senate February 2008 and passed as part of the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 in August. Now there will be ‘Centers for Veteran Student Success on Campus’ at many schools across the country.
CSU’s first SERV class started in the Spring of Last year. The First semester brought 14 students into the vets only classes, and 10 of them passed and went on to the summer semester(a 70% retention rate). During Fall 2008, There were 25 students total, and 23 went on to the spring semester—a 92% retention rate.
The Sunday New York Times and National Public radio, all the armed forces media, and the Chronicle of Higher Education have taken an interest in SERV. And John Schupp loses no chance to spread the word at conferences and conventions around the country, as he continues to remind us of our responsibility to those who’ve served.
