Overview
This webinar will showcase a set of programs at DePaul University – including the Chicago Quarter, the Office of Academic Advising Support, and the University Internship Program – which contribute to students’ intellectual and ethical growth, civil and social responsibility, work-related skills, and career awareness.  In each program, staff collaborates with faculty to convey a consistent message about student success:  in particular, the need for both academic and career planning, and the benefits of integrating their work in and out of the classroom.

 


Objectives


Participants will learn:

  • models for faculty / staff collaborations
  • a framework for helping students engage in academic and career planning
  • a framework for sequencing targeted experiences across several years that will lead to students’ success
  • a framework for integrating accredited academic coursework with supervised, relevant experiences in the workplace.

Who are the speakers? 

Peggy Burke is currently Associate Vice President of Student Development at DePaul University.  She is responsible for developing out-of-classroom learning opportunities for students. Burke oversees the departments of Residential Education, Student Life, Student Leadership Institute, and Academic Enhancement and also serves on the Leadership team of the Vice President of Student Affairs.  She is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) IV-East Advisory Board and has presented on academic affairs / student affairs collaborative partnerships at numerous national and regional conferences.  She earned her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Loyola University of Chicago. 

Caryn Chaden is currently Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of English at DePaul University.  She coordinates university-wide efforts to enhance academic advising and has oversight responsibility for the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment, the Office for Academic Advising Support, and the Academic Integrity review process.  Chaden teaches a variety of courses in the English Department and a graduate course on Issues in Higher Education Administration for the School of Public Services at DePaul.  She has presented at annual conferences of the American Association of Colleges and Universities, the National Society of Experiential Education, and the Higher Learning Commission, for whom she serves as a Consultant/Evaluator.  She earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of Virginia
 
Lynne Copp, Director of the University Internship Program (UIP) at DePaul, teaches in the UIP as well as supervises a 13-member faculty, oversees curriculum development and modifications, and is responsible for all academic components of the program, including assessment, evaluation, and expansion.  Copp has presented at several association conferences, including the American Association of Colleges and Universities, the National Society for Experiential Education, the World Association for Cooperative Education, the National Career Development Association, and the International Leadership Association.  She earned her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts from Pacifica Graduate Institute. 

Lisa Davidson, Director of the Office for Academic Advising Support, leads an advising team that assists exploratory students in identifying and exploring majors that best fit their interests, skills, values, and goals.  With eleven years of experience comprised of both academic and career advising, she designs and implements advising practices that allow students to understand and integrate their personal, academic, and career development. Davidson has presented her work at conferences of NACADA, the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition, and the Northern Ohio/Southern Ohio Transfer Council.  She holds a M.Ed. in Counseling from DePaul University
