"Our primary goal for this session is to introduce a data-based professional development model for building assessment capacity across campus.  We will demonstrate how the model can, with minimal cost, be adapted across different types of institutions using existing expertise and resources.  Participants will leave the workshop with a variety of strategies, tips, and resources to support the successful implementation of the model on their campuses."

Overview

While student services practitioners are increasingly required to assess student learning outcomes and program efficacy, research suggests that many student services professionals lack the experience and resources for conducting assessment.  The presenters developed and implemented the Student Services Assessment Institute, a comprehensive training program for student services personnel that has improved the use, quality, and institutionalization of assessment among their institution's student services programs.  Workshop participants will have an opportunity to discuss possibilities for adapting the model to their campuses.

Objectives

By the end of both sessions, participants will . . .

1. Gain knowledge of a cohort-based assessment training model;
2. Understand how the model could be adapted to their campus; and

3. Identify specific strategies and resources to support the successful implementation of the model.

By the end of session 1, participants will . . .

1. Understand why professional development is essential for creating a culture of assessment among student services professionals;
2. Identify strengths and challenges on their campuses related to implementing a professional development model; and

3. Understand how the essential components of effective professional development on assessment could be addressed on their campus.

By the end of session 2, participants will . . .

1. Increase knowledge about how to design the training curriculum;
2. Identify potential workshop topics and presenters for their campus; and

3. Develop strategies for assessing the effectiveness of their training program.
