All educators are expected to lead – but few know what leaders do when confronted with a new challenge. Leadership challenges rarely are solved by a “cookbook” approach, because educators work with multi-layered problems in highly complex environments – often with uncertain futures. And we all know that stakes are high, linked to such outcomes as student success, productivity, financial stability and morale. Educators need a practical approach for meeting the challenges and tasks we often face on a daily basis. A leadership approach should build educator effectiveness with such tasks as committee participation, curriculum implementation, and involvement with large and small campus or community projects.

This seminar will provide educators with practical tools to advance their leadership skills. The session begins with a template to organize leadership development into four categories that range from “micro” to “macro” skills. Educators should recognize these skills as cornerstones for their leadership development. Next we will focus on a four-part framework that illustrates what effective leaders actually do when they diagnose gaps and plan leadership actions. This framework is adapted from a long-standing model that has been used successfully in educational leadership practice, and is the basis for several of the presenter’s leadership courses. We will apply the framework to a case example, using a structured worksheet to see the frames in action. The session will close with “lessons from the field” along with select resources for improving future leadership effectiveness.

Objectives

Participants in this seminar will be able to:
  1. Describe an organizing template they can apply to their own leadership development
  2. List the four parts of a tested framework for diagnosing gaps and implementing leadership actions
  3. Apply the framework to a case example, completing a detailed worksheet
  4. Discuss lessons from the field and share resources with co-participants.

Who should attend?

This seminar is intended for all educators who want to be more prepared as leaders. The models and case we discuss will illuminate leadership steps that could be applied to simple and complex leadership challenges. While references and resources will be provided, the webinar emphasis will be more practical than theoretical.
