Overview

This presentation is an in-depth examination of a proven formula and model for student success. The Seidman Retention Formula posits that Retention = Early _{Identification}+ (Early + Intensive + Continuous) _{Intervention.}The Seidman Success Model is integrated into this formula and shows how a college faculty, with administrative support, can prepare their programs and courses so students will have the greatest probability of success both personally and academically. The integration of college services and programs (assessment, developmental courses, career services, faculty, financial aid, internships, learning & classroom communities, learning resource centers, mission statement, orientation) is critical to student success and a vital part of this model.

What this webinar isn’t: This webinar is not to sell a product or service. Rather it will present a proven formula and model for student success that you can implement at your institution.

Who is the instructor?

Dr. Alan Seidman is the Executive Director of the Center for the Study of College Student Retention (www.cscsr.org). The Center provides retention resources to individuals and educational institutions including the Journal of College Student Retention: Research, Theory & Practice which Dr. Seidman founded and edits. It is the only scholarly journal devoted exclusively to college student retention issues. The Center also hosts a retention discussion group with over 1,100 members’ world wide, a retention reference list with over 1,600 retention references, slide shows, issues, affiliates and consulting services.

Dr. Seidman’s book, College student retention: Formula for student success, was published by ACE/Praeger Press in 2005 as was his book chapter, Minority student retention: Resources for practitioners in Minority retention: What works? His second book, Minority student retention- the best of the Journal of College Student Retention: Research, Theory & Practice was published by Baywood Publishing Company, Inc. Seidman has also published articles in scholarly journals in the area of retention and attrition, student services, enrollment management and has given presentations on these topics at local, state, regional, national and international conferences and presentations/workshops to college and university administrators, faculty and staff. Dr. Seidman appeared on Fox News Live Weekend to talk about college student retention.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Dr. Seidman is a member of the NH Judicial Council, appointed by the Governor of NH, U.S. Department of Commerce Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA); grant reader for the U.S. Department of Education, Alternate, State of New Hampshire Taxpayer Advocacy Panel Internal Revenue Service U.S. Department of the Treasury, a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program volunteer.

Dr. Seidman has over thirty years of experience in education as a college administrator, educational consultant and elementary school teacher. He earned his B.A. & M.A. from Glassboro State College, NJ and his Ed.D. from Syracuse University, NY.

What is a webinar?

A webinar is an interactive seminar conducted over the web and is typically 1.5 to 2 hours long.

What is the process? Webinar participants log into the webinar site with a username and password sent via email. Participants can print handouts, as we send you a link to the presentation via email approximately 2 days prior to the event. Once logged in, you are able to see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions and make comments via chat, very similar to instant messaging.
Is there a recording available? Approximately one week after the conclusion of the webinar, you will receive a link to the recording which is yours for one year and can be forwarded to all faculty and staff at your institution for viewing anytime, anywhere.
What equipment is required? An Internet connection, computer speakers and LCD projector if a large group is present.
