Overview of Webinar Series
Institutions of higher education need to provide quality programs and services that address the unique needs of student veterans. During this 5-part series, our expert speakers will focus on working with students who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder, understanding the issues and concerns that seem to be gender specific for the women veterans on campus, how faculty can provide quality instructional services for veterans and military family members, and what it takes to create or improve a student veterans office and a student veterans club.

Webinar 1
A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Quality Veterans Services Office on Your Campus
Participants will walk step-by-step through a series of planning, design and implementation steps that, if followed, can lead to the creation of a quality veterans office. They will also learn how to evaluate the effectiveness of the office and move forward with maintenance and growth activities.
Presenter:  Dr. John Schupp, Founder of the Serv Program

Webinar 2
Women Veterans Returning to Campus: Exploring the Military and Gender Transition Issues
Join us for an in-depth exploration of those issues and concerns that seem to be gender specific for the women veterans returning to college campuses. Supportive Education for the Returning Veteran (SERV) will provide insight into what today's women veterans need, and how to create and run an effective women veterans program.
Presenter:  Roger Buck, Ph.D., retired U.S. Navy Veteran

Webinar 3
Providing Quality Instructional Services for Veterans and Military Family Members
This presentation will describe how faculty can be prepared to provide quality instructional services for veterans and military family members.  Participants will learn which specific services and activities are best suited to serve these individuals in the classroom and on campus.  The presenter will also identify the biggest obstacles to implementing services and programs for veterans and family members and how campuses might overcome these obstacles.
Presenter: Donald Pfeffer, Director of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA), Higher Education Veterans Programs

Webinar 4
Understanding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: How to Improve the Academic Success of Student Veterans on Your Campus
This Webinar will extensively review the symptoms of post-trauma adjustment difficulties, environmental triggers, assistance and treatment options, useful college services, programs and supports, gaps in services, gender specific issues, and recommendations that will improve academic success of military student veterans. There will be various suggested policy and cultural changes provided that are needed for your campus to be considered as “trauma informed”.
Presenters:  Roger Buck, Ph.D., retired U.S. Navy Veteran and Dr. Edgardo Padin, Ph.D., Chief of Psychology Services, Louis Stokes Cleveland DVA Medical Center

What is a webinar?

A webinar is an interactive seminar conducted over the web and is typically 1.5 to 2 hours long.

  • What is the process?   Webinar participants log into the webinar site with a username and password sent via email.  Participants can print handouts, as we send you a link to the presentation via email approximately 2 days prior to the event. Once logged in, you are able to see the PowerPoint slides, ask questions and make comments via chat, very similar to instant messaging.
  • Is there a recording available?  Approximately one week after the conclusion of the webinar, you will receive a link to the recording which is yours for one year and can be forwarded to all faculty and staff at your institution for viewing anytime, anywhere.
  • What equipment is required? An Internet connection, computer speakers and LCD projector if a large group is present.

What are the benefits of a webinar?

  • Cost-Effective:  No travel required.  Webinars are an innovative way to provide your entire faculty and staff with a variety of professional development opportunities for one low price!  The more you train - the more you save, as the registration fee is per institution, not per person.
  • Easy:  You will receive a detailed list of instructions via email a week prior to the event.  And if you run into any problems, we're always here to help.
  • Interactive:  Chat online with presenters, participate in online polling questions, discuss specific situations with your colleagues, and receive implementation strategies for your campus (included when appropriate).  You can even join a discussion group to continue the discussion with the presenter and webinar participants.  Join discussion groups at https://owa014.msoutlookonline.net/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.weeklyinnovations.org/.
  • Practical:  Our training sessions focus on the most critical and relevant issues facing educators today.  Our primary goal is to provide participants with the information, training and skills necessary to immediately implement positive change at their institutions.
  • Top-Notch Speakers:  Our speakers are subject matter experts and recognized in their field.
  • Value Added:  When you purchase a webinar, you also receive access to the recording, which is good for one year.  You can use it wherever and as often as you want, offering consistent training to your faculty and staff.

How will we use these trainings?

  • Flexible Training:
    • Live:  Promote and attend a live webinar and debrief immediately following.
    • Hybrid:  Distribute a recording to all faculty and staff at the beginning of each month and plan a discussion session at the end of the month to determine how you will implement the strategies presented.
    • On-Demand:  Distribute a recording to faculty and staff so they can watch anytime, anywhere.  Contact Innovative Educators at val@ieinfo.org, and we will create an online discussion group specifically for your institution at no extra charge.
  • In-Service Training:  Plan an in-service around a live webinar or schedule a day and time to show the recording in a lecture hall or large conference room and invite faculty and staff to attend - brainstorm and discuss implications for your college.
  • Staff Recognition:  Develop a program around the webinar with monthly themes and recognize the staff members that implement the best idea related to the theme.
  • Team-Building:  Utilize these webinars to develop cross-functional and cross-discipline teams to foster collegiality.
  • New Employee Training:  Include these webinars and the free recording as part of your new employee training program to ensure consistency.
  • Implementation and Follow-Up:  Use the guide and evaluation materials provided by Innovative Educators to plan, implement, and track your progress.
